Frequently Asked Questions
Does the student pay a fee to attend orientation?
Yes. The new student orientation fee you paid earlier covers the cost of orientation. There is no
additional charge for the student to attend.
Why are transfer students required to attend orientation?
Academic Orientation is required to finalize your admission to the university and schedule your
first semester classes. We recognize that new transfer students have college experience and
have attended orientation sessions at other colleges or universities.
For these reasons, our transfer orientation session is very specific and focused exclusively
on the academic advising needs of new transfer students.
I haven’t received information to sign up for orientation?
Orientation information is mailed after the new student
orientation fee has been paid. The Admissions
office mails a packet of information to students who have been accepted to attend CMU.
The packet includes the new student fee card. The fee must be paid to the Admissions office
before orientation information is mailed to you.
Will transfer orientation involve tours of campus?
No. Tours of campus are not included in the transfer orientation agenda.
Students attending transfer orientation will register for first semester classes with
the assistance of academic advisors, receive a campus identification card and have lunch on campus.
All students have the option of meeting with representatives from student service offices
such as Scholarships and Financial Aid, Receivable Accounting, Student Employment and Residence Life.
How can I be sure I get the classes I need?
Academic advisors will work individually with each student attending transfer orientation. Students complete the first semester class schedule with classes required on the degree program of choice. Once orientation is complete, all students have access to CMU’s registration system and may continue to make changes and adjustments to the schedule created during orientation.
When will I know the transfer orientation date I have been assigned?
You will be mailed a letter confirming the orientation date you have been assigned within a week
after we receive your reservation card. Your confirmation letter contains specific details about your orientation.
Read and keep your confirmation information.
What is the transfer orientation schedule like?
Your transfer orientation begins with morning check-in at
9 pm. Your day will end
at approximately 3 pm. Look for specific details on
where your orientation will be held in your confirmation
materials. Designated parking for orientation participants will be in Lot 8 on Bellows Street.
Driving directions and an online campus map are available at http://www.cmich.edu/visit/campus_map.htm.
Am I allowed to leave transfer orientation during the session?
No. Students are required to stay with the orientation program and their assigned group throughout the entire day.
Who can come with me to orientation?
Family members are invited to attend a meeting that is held separately from your academic advising
session. This is an excellent opportunity for family members to ask questions and learn more
about your new university. There is no additional fee for the transfer orientation family meeting.
Family members can purchase lunch on campus during orientation.
Can I bring a friend with me?
No. Space is limited to new transfer students and their family members only. It is not possible for
friends to attend your orientation session.
Will my family members be with me when I schedule classes?
No. Family members are not with you when you schedule classes with your advisor. At the conclusion of
orientation and throughout the summer months, CMU advisors are available to answer parent questions
regarding classes, academic program requirements and the registration process.
Do I need to set up an appointment with an advisor prior to orientation?
No. Meeting with an advisor and registering for your classes are part of the orientation program.
I can’t attend on any of the dates listed on the reservation card. What do I do?
Other dates may be available that are
not listed on the reservation card mailed to you. Review
additional dates on this website or contact the Orientation
office for assistance (989-774-1099).
