- The College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral
Sciences is the largest of six academic colleges at Central
Michigan University. With more than 250 faculty members and
eight departments, the college encourages disciplined
inquiry into ideas that grow out of the human experience.
The college offers 34 majors and 38 minors as well as 15
graduate programs and several interdisciplinary majors.
- CMU’s highly acclaimed psychology department offers four
separate doctoral programs that are accredited by the
American Psychological Association and the National
Association of Programs of School Psychologists.
- CMU’s history department offers innovative collaborative
master’s and doctoral programs with the University of
Strathclyde in Scotland.
- CMU’s sociology, anthropology, and social work
department offers an accredited bachelor of social work
degree program.
- CMU’s Robert and Marjorie Griffin Endowed Chair in
American Government is occupied by a political expert who
teaches and conducts issue forums that generate renewed
interest in government. The chair is named after CMU alumnus
and former U.S. Senator Robert P. Griffin and his wife,
Marjorie, former Clarke Historical Library board member.
- The College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral
Sciences provides many international opportunities for its
students, including study abroad, living in the Foreign
Language Residential College, and international faculty
members.
- CMU’s English Language Institute provides courses in
English as a Second Language for non-degree undergraduate
and graduate students. Students receive cultural training
and language skills required to succeed in a university as
well as in American society.
- The Center for Applied Research and Rural Studies
addresses issues of concern to rural Michigan. The center
utilizes the resources and academic expertise of CMU to
assist social agencies, governmental units and non-profit
organizations who require guidance in order to address
social, economic, environmental and community development
concerns.
- CMU’s Center for Professional and Personal Ethics
supports the study, teaching and practice of ethics and aims
to promote moral excellence in both the personal and
professional lives of those in our community. The center
sponsors a variety of activities throughout the school year
to promote ethical reflection.
- DB Central, Michigan Services for Children and Young
Adults Who Are Deaf-Blind, is a comprehensive, statewide
technical assistance project that provides information,
training, and support for families and professionals who are
impacted by a child who is deaf-blind. Services are provided
year-round, free of charge, and can be accessed until the
individual has left their educational setting.
- CMU’s Psychological Training and Consultation Center
trains students enrolled in the psychology applied graduate
program to help resolve human problems. The center provides
psychological services to the residents of Central and
North-Central Michigan.
- The CMU Law Professions Center advises and assists
students in preparing for law. Such centers do not exist on
most campuses, yet CMU has had the law center for almost 30
years.
- CMU’s Language Learning Center is an excellent resource
for foreign language students. The center includes
audio/visual and computer laboratories, as well as audio,
video and text libraries. Computers are outfitted with
microphones and recording software to aid students with
their pronunciation and fluency.
