Consumer Digest’s 2004 50 Best
Values for Public Colleges and Universities
included only one Michigan higher education institution —
Central Michigan University. CMU ranked 43rd nationwide for
its combination of academic excellence and affordability.

CMU’s Public Broadcasting Service is the largest
university-operated network in the entire country, with
seven radio and six television stations serving audiences
throughout central and northern Michigan and parts of
Canada.
- CMU’s off-campus
academic program delivery service, ProfEd, is one
of the leading and largest providers of off-campus programs
in North America, currently educating more than 8,000
students at 60 centers across the country. ProfEd currently
offers more than 2,100 classes and enrolls more than 8,000
students at 60 centers across the country, including a dozen
centers in Michigan alone.
- CMU’s Center for Applied Research and Technology
is a leading Michigan SmartZone that brings renowned
scientists, faculty, students, and government resources
together to conduct biotechnology research of importance to
national security and American health care.
- CMU’s working relationship with
Michigan Special Olympics –
one of only a handful of such partnerships in the nation –
has enriched both institutions for more than 30 years.
- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, during a January 2003 visit
to campus, praised CMU as a role model for other
institutions in its willingness to develop partnerships in
the community and with businesses and foundations.
- CMU’s Volunteer Center offers numerous opportunities for
students to volunteer on campus, within local and regional
agencies, and in domestic and international Alternative
Spring Breaks and Weekends. The center also administers
America Reads, a federal tutoring program for second grade
students, and the David Garcia empathy project, which
attempts to illustrate what it’s like to have a disability.
- CMU’s partnership with Flint Community Schools and the
Michigan Department for Career Development provides
underrepresented students with academic support and
preparation necessary for college through GEAR UP – Gaining
Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.
- CMU’s Native American Programs office collaborates with
traditional and native schools and organizations in the
mid-Michigan community to spread awareness about native
culture and educational opportunities for underrepresented
people.
