Central
Michigan University's spacious Mount Pleasant campus is known
for its park-like setting. Academic buildings are surrounded
by trees and a variety of flowers and shrubbery. The campus
also features outdoor sculptures. Recent years have seen rapid
growth on campus, with the renovation of several older buildings
and the addition of many new buildings.
The Student Activity Center is a $16 million multipurpose
facility that opened in 1991. Memberships to the SAC are available
to CMU employees and their families at a discounted rate.
The facility offers an opportunity for recreation, stress
reduction and fitness activities including swimming, racquetball,
weight lifting, bowling, aerobics, tennis, track, indoor soccer,
floor hockey, indoor golf, archery and others.
The Dow Science Complex opened in 1992. The four-level facility
includes 10 classrooms and lecture halls, 74 research labs,
37 academic rooms and a 4,000-square-foot greenhouse.
In 1997 a new $21 million music building opened that features
technologically advanced performance space, computer-aided
listening and instructional labs and an educational environment
designed to promote creative music making.

Gerald L. Poor School Museum, a living museum of rural education;
the Brooks Astronomical Observatory; and the Museum for Cultural
and Natural History.
Through CMU's Off
Campus Programs, degrees and certificates are offered
at more than 50 off-campus sites throughout the United States.
The college's independent learning and distance delivery
center
offers independent learning classes. Courses also are available
in various formats including print-based learning packages,
Internet courses on the World Wide Web, telecourses and courses
through interactive television. As CMU continues to expand
its national programs, more employment opportunities will
be available.
In addition to its physical growth, CMU also has expanded
the programs of study it offers. In recent years, CMU has
added master's level programs for physical therapists and
physician assistants and doctoral programs in audiology, mathematics
education and history.
