Public relations and marketing
Public Relations and Marketing (PRM) helps advance CMU’s
mission, goals, messages, and identity as a nationally
distinguished university. PRM staff members establish press
relations and direct the creation and implementation of
public relations and marketing plans for CMU’s academic
units and its service and programming initiatives. They
advise university constituents regarding media relations,
and they create, edit, design and supervise production of
internal and external publications. They oversee the
university’s electronic communications, advertising,
photography, related plans and budgets, and other aspects of
both public relations and marketing. PRM provides extensive
media, Web, and publications services through its sports
information unit.

Media relations
This area acts as a liaison between the media and specific colleges,
and academic and administrative departments. Media relations produces news
releases, news tips, and provides photography and videography
services. Coordination of media visits to campus,
identifying faculty experts for the media, and scheduling
news conferences also are areas of the office's
responsibility.

Marketing and online communications
This area provides marketing direction and electronic
communications support for university programs and projects.
The director of marketing and online communications
identifies and analyzes appropriate data and current
marketing initiatives and develops long-term strategic plans
to advance the university’s image, programs, services, and
engagements in the life of the community. The director of
marketing and online communications works in collaboration
with the director of publications to develop and direct a
university-wide advertising program.

Sports information
This area serves as a liaison between Central Michigan
University athletic teams, coaches, and student-athletes and
the media. The office provides extensive coverage of CMU's
16 sports with media guides, game programs, and weekly
releases that are posted on the Web (cmuchippewas.com).

This area produces photographs for internal publications, provides photos to
wire services and other media, and provides photography services to other campus
offices as time permits.

Advertising and licensing
This area, in collaboration with the director of marketing
and online communications, develops and directs a
university-wide advertising program that includes purchasing
advertising and ensuring its quality, consistency, accuracy,
and effectiveness. The licensing program monitors,
authorizes, and controls all commercial use of university
trademarks.

Publications and Creative Services
The publications area produces content, edits, and designs official university publications,
particularly those for external audiences and those that focus on student recruitment and fund-raising.
The department also reviews all publications that represent CMU and are distributed off campus –
in accordance with university policy – advises university offices about publications needs,
and serves as liaison between the university and CMU Printing Services.
