The Take Care initiative is very young and its initial success will depend on the willingness of people close to the project to persevere through resistance or disinterest until it is established part of the culture at CMU. Because there is a general atmosphere of friendliness and concern, the shift required in making people feel responsible for their community will be easier than it would be in another environment (i.e. a larger, more urban campus). However, the idea of intervening to help others is generally discouraged in a society that stresses autonomy. The basis for the Take Care initiative is CMU’s unique sense of pride in being friendly and accessible.
