Terms and Conditions 2007-2008
The rates for 2008-09 academic year will be set by the Board of Trustees in the summer of 2008. Any updates to the Terms and Conditions will be made at that time.
NEW STUDENTS
In the 2007-2008 academic year, the total undergraduate tuition rate for new in-state students is
fixed at $304 per credit hour. This amount will not change for these students for the following
4 years, from the date of their initial enrollment.
In the 2007-2008 academic year, the total undergraduate tuition rate for new out-of-state students is fixed at $707 per credit hour. This amount will not change for these students for the following 4 years, from the date of their intial enrollment.
"New students" include persons who have not been registered for any semester since before fall 2005. The term includes new freshmen and new transfer students.
New students who first enroll for the 2007-2008 academic year will be guaranteed a tuition rate ($304 for in-state students and $707 for out-of-state students) for the following 4 years from the date of their initial enrollment.
These guaranteed tuition rates are in effect for the four years stated above. One additional year at the same tuition rate is available if needed to complete a bachelor's degree.
If a student ceases attendance and then resumes attendance during those five years, the same tuition rates
will apply through the end of the five-year period. If a student ceases attendance and then resumes attendance
after the five-year period, the tuition rates for the later enrollment will be the rates in effect at that time
for new students.

RETURNING STUDENTS
Students who earned credits at CMU in the spring or summer of 2007 and who return in the fall of 2007 are
called "returning students." Those students were offered a guaranteed tuition rate for four years of tuition
with a one-year extension if needed.
Students who first earned credit at CMU in the Fall 2006, Spring 2007, or Summer 2007 semesters are returning students who pay Fall 2006 new student rates (Cohort T06).
All students who enrolled in either Fall 2005, Spring or Summer 2006 were assigned to a class standing or "cohort" according to the number of credits that had been completed by the end of summer 2005 (see below). Each class of students was guaranteed tuition rates for a prorated period of time. ).
Cohort T05 - Up to 25 credits
- Students who had completed up to 25 credits were assigned a class standing of freshmen and were guaranteed four years of tuition from the semester of enrollment with a one-year extension if necessary to complete a bachelor's degree.
Cohort T04 - 26-55 credits
- Students who had completed 26 to 55 credits were assigned a class standing of sophomores and were guaranteed three years of tuition from the semester of enrollment with a one-year extension if necessary to complete a bachelor's degree.
Cohort T03 - 56-85 credits
- Students who had completed 56 to 85 credits were assigned a class standing of juniors and guaranteed two years of tuition from the time of enrollment with a one year extension if necessary to complete a bachelor's degree.
Cohort T02 - 86-100 credits
- Students who had completed 86 to 100 credits were assigned a class standing of seniors and were guaranteed two years of tuition from the semester of enrollment.
Use the Tuition Rate Calculator to determine your rate. Separate in-state and out-of-state tuition rates are established.
If a returning student does not complete the undergraduate degree within the time period allowed under this program and continues to attend during the following year or years, that student will pay the New Student rate for each of the following years.
TERMS APPLYING TO ALL STUDENTSThe CMU Promise guaranteed tuition plan rates are in effect for, and only for, the number of years promised when a student begins classes at CMU.
If a student ceases attendance and then resumes attendance during
that period of time, the same tuition rates will apply through the
end of his or her original guarantee period. If a student ceases
attendance and then resumes attendance after the end of the years
promised, the tuition rates for the later enrollment will be the
rates in effect at that time for new students.
The guaranteed tuition rates apply whether students attend part time
or full time. Students may enroll at these tuition rates for as many
credits in a semester as university academic policy allows.
These guaranteed tuition rates apply only to undergraduate courses taken as an on-campus student. They do not apply to courses taken through ProfEd or other off-campus programs. Students taking CMU off-campus or online courses ONLY are not eligible for this program.
Until the fall of 2005, CMU assessed mandatory fees: Student Activity, Campus Improvement, Library, Campus Programming, Technology, Enrollment, and Student Publication fees. In the fall 2005 semester, these fees were eliminated.
However, students may be assessed certain other fees in addition
to the guaranteed tuition rate. For example, certain academic
programs assess separate surcharges. Some courses assess a special
fee for supplies, field trips, etc. Students studying abroad may
have to pay a different tuition rate as assessed by the program or
university they attend while abroad. They also may incur additional
fees for enrollment, insurance, and travel. Students also pay for
services and privileges they choose to purchase such as expanded
meal plans and campus parking permits.
The guaranteed rates are available for the number of years stated in
the cohort chart and may be applied to either undergraduate or graduate
credit only while the student is pursuing an undergraduate degree.
If a returning student does not complete the undergraduate degree within the time period allowed under this program and continues to attend during the following year or years, that student will pay the New Student rate for each of the following years.
STUDENTS ENROLLED AFTER SUMMER 2008
Students enrolled at CMU beginning in the fall 2008 semester are not eligible to receive The CMU Promise.
Students returning to CMU after the expiration of the years of the initial tuition guarantee will pay the new rates in effect at the time of their subsequent enrollment.
