We are proud of our many accomplishments at Central Michigan University. The following are just a few of the highlights of this year's achievements by students, faculty and staff.

  • One of 9 universities nationwide to receive the Katrina Compassion Award for Excellence in Hurricane Relief Service
  • Fourth largest enrollment - 27,768 - among Michigan's 15 public universities
  • Performs in the top 17% of all national universities for graduation rate performance

Academic Programs  (top)

  • Journalism program is one of two in Michigan and 111 nationwide to be accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education and Mass Communication
  • BCA program is one of only 20 nationwide eligible to receive scholarships and internships from the John Bayliss Foundation
  • Only Michigan university that has a body scanner, which records more than 300,000 data points on the body
  • BCA program is one of only two nationwide to win National Broadcasting Society production competition grand prizes in six or more categories
  • Two CMU alumni have been awarded national Milken awards, making them among the top 100 teachers in the nation
  • Gary Gagnon was named 2005 Michigan Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation
  • First university nationwide to offer a four-year accredited athletic training program
  • 2006 physician assistant class posted the best score in the nation (17% higher than the national average) on the standardized PACKRAT exam
  • Only university in Michigan with an undergraduate degree in meteorology
  • CMU's Off Campus Programs ranked first among Michigan public universities in the number of master's degrees awarded to African Americans
  • Only university in the nation with a bachelor's degree concentration in microscopy

Research  (top)

  • One of only two universities in the Midwest to operate an island research station (Beaver Island)
  • Assisted Reebok by using state-of-the-art technology to perform testing on new NHL uniforms

Athletics  (top)

  • Student athletes have won the MAC Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the highest cumulative student athlete GPA the last six years in a row and 10 of the last 11 years overall.
  • For the third consecutive year, the women's soccer team earned the No. 1 rank for highest cumulative GPA in the nation
  • Wrestling team has won 10 consecutive and 13 of the last 17 MAC championships
  • 2006-2007 football team won the Motor City Bowl after capturing the MAC championship title

Student Awards  (top)

  • Graduate student Jane Schild received the 2006 Best Student Presentation Award from the North American Lake Management Society
  • CMU student Jonathan Knapp won the best student poster award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science
  • Association of Information Technology Professionals student chapter won the Student Chapter Outstanding Performance Award
  • CM Life earned its 11th Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award

Student Life  (top)

  • Nationally known Leadership Institute develops more than 5,000 student leaders annually
  • More than 60% of CMU students volunteer or do community service, exceeding the national average for student volunteerism
  • Received the Medium School of the Year Award from the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls
  • CMU seniors exceed the national average by almost 15% with their participation in co-curricular activities
