Office of the President

Welcome to Central Michigan University

CMU interim president Kathy Wilbur

We are the 67th largest four-year public institution in the nation and the fourth largest in the state of Michigan. With these distinctions comes an unyielding commitment from our respected faculty and dedicated staff members to provide the best educational experiences possible to advance the personal ambitions and professional goals of our more than 28,000 students and enhance the overall quality of life of people throughout the state, nation and world.

Our impressive breadth of more than 200 academic programs at the bachelor's, master's, specialist and doctoral levels include nationally ranked programs in entrepreneurship, journalism, music, audiology, teacher education, psychology and physician assistant. And CMU is adding to its strong foundation with a program in engineering and through the establishment of a new school of medicine, which will serve the health care needs of central and northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Leading our programs is an accomplished faculty dedicated to teaching who are steadfast in involving students in applied scholarship, research and creative activities. Esteemed educators have taken notice: This past decade three CMU faculty have received the prestigious Michigan Professor of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching - Mark Francek, geography; Norma Bailey, teacher education and professional development; and Gary Gagnon, marketing and hospitality services administration.

Our faculty and students are engaged in important research that is positively affecting people's lives. This includes assisting Reebok by using state-of-the-art technology to test new NHL uniforms as well as working with the Pentagon in developing filtration technology to remove contaminants and other hazardous materials from water. Students also have presented their research at the State Capitol in Lansing, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and at professional conferences nationwide.

Our students' contributions also benefit the local and global communities. More than 70 percent of all CMU students volunteer or do community service during their time at CMU, which exceeds the national average for student volunteerism among colleges participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement.

Visit our Mount Pleasant campus to see all the learning opportunities our advanced facilities create, including our newly opened Education and Human Services Building. During your visit, explore the entertainment, cultural and recreational opportunities that await you in the charming historic city of Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and our surrounding communities.

Look through our Web site and learn more about our academic programs that are available on campus, at one of 60 off-campus centers nationwide and online.

I encourage you to immerse yourself in everything that is CMU.

Sincerely,

Kathleen M. Wilbur
Interim President
