ResNet
ResNet is a service available to CMU students to help them connect their computers to the CMU network, and remove viruses and spyware from their computers.
In the beginning of the Fall semester, special service areas called ResNet Depots are set up around campus to assist students if they have a problem getting their computer working on the network. There is one Depot Station located near each of the four main Residence Hall Quads:
- North Residence Halls – Larzelere Basement Rec Room
- South Residence Halls – Merrill Basement, Room 032
- East Residence Halls – Woldt Lab, Video Conference Room
- Towers Residence Halls – Kulhavi, Classroom 142
The Depots will be open August 13-25 2011, 7 days a week, from 12 noon to 8 pm.
Below is some helpful information that will assist you with connecting to the CMU network.
In order to maintain security and provide a stable networking environment, CMU requires all Windows-based computers to pass a series of security checks before they are allowed to access the campus network. Technicians will be available for assistance with configuring your personal computing device, but you can avoid the wait by performing a few easy steps.
Preparing your Windows-based computer
The following preventative steps from your home internet connection will help you pass your initial on-line computer registration security check, which will occur the first time you connect your computer to CMU’s network:1. Run Windows update
To update your Windows operating system:Click on the Start Menu, go to All Programs, select Windows Update.
-OR-
Open your Internet Explorer browser, click on “Tools” in the menu bar, and select “Windows Update”.
2. Install/update anti-virus software
If you already have an anti-virus software package installed on your computer, you'll need to make sure it has been updated with the latest anti-virus definition files. If you currenly lack an anti-virus software package, or the software you have installed on your computer has expired, CMU provides the McAfee Enterprise anti-virus software packaged to CMU students at no charge. You can download it from our Software Download Center (requires your Global ID and password to login). You can also stop by the Help Desk, located in the Park Library, to pick up a Virus Scan DVD. Remember to uninstall any other anti-virus software you may have installed before installing McAfee! When installing McAfee, you will automatically be prompted to update it before completing the installation process.
Other Computer Operating Systems (Macs, Linux, etc.)
Macs and other computers that are not running a Windows Operating System (OS) will not be prompted to run the same security checks required for Windows OS computers. However, they will still need to be registered on the CMU network with your Global ID and password. When you get to campus
When you first arrive on campus, follow these four easy steps to get on the network:- Plug in your Ethernet cable.
- Turn on your computer.
- Open your web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc), and try connecting to an internet website.
- Follow the directions on the screen to register your computer on the network using your CMU Global ID.
You can obtain your CMU Global ID and password from the Help Desk, available at (989) 774-3662.
You can test your computer from home to see if it will pass the security and registration process by going to http://reg.cmich.edu. You will need your CMU Global ID and password to successfully complete this test.
By following these basic steps you can avoid any delays or problems with accessing Central Michigan University’s network.
