Anne Kozlowski

Sophomore
Music Theatre Major

Hometown: Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Anne portrayed Rosamund in CMU University Theatre’s fall 2011 production of “The Robber Bridegroom,” a lively musical about Mississippi natives recounting the folk history of their ancestors. Being involved in on-campus productions has provided her opportunities that will benefit her dreams of someday performing on Broadway.

Hard work pays off: “It’s amazing all of the work that goes into putting on a show for five days. I love the journey that everyone takes together and the relationships you gain from it.”

Skills to make it: Through her academics and involvement in the theater program, Anne has learned a number of skills, such as communication, collaboration and time management, that she says will help give her a competitive edge. “Since I want to be a professional performer, being involved in theater at CMU has given me many professional skills that I will need when I graduate.”

Family ties: “The professors and people here are wonderful. I couldn’t have asked for a better family here at CMU, and I don’t know where I would be without all of them.”

John G. Phillips

Senior
Biology, Environmental Studies and History major

Hometown: Manistee, Mich.

John is establishing a legacy at CMU as the first undergraduate student nominated for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship opportunity. His determined efforts are seen both inside and outside the classroom, from working closely in the lab with CMU faculty member Kirsten Nicholson investigating the systematics of anole lizards, to conducting international research on relationships between species, motivating his triathlon club teammates and combining travel with preservation efforts as an Alternative Breaks site leader.

Scholar at heart: “I have really enjoyed the opportunities that being a Centralis scholar has provided to me, and I would recommend any student try out the Honors Program. The research experience that I have gained through the program has been invaluable when applying for graduate school because it has made me stand out against the competition.”

Inspired by collaboration: “I believe we can find inspiration from many different people everyday. Dr. Nicholson inspires me as I work on research in her lab. She encourages me to do a lot of interesting research, and I would not be where I am today without her.”

Impacting the future: “Being the first person from CMU to be nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship is surreal and something that I hope carries on long after I graduate to provide other students the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent their university.”
