Network Registration
In order to maintain security and provide a stable networking environment, CMU requires all Windows-based computers to pass a series of security checks before they are allowed to access the campus network.
Click on the Start Menu, go to All Programs, select Windows Update.

Open your Internet Explorer browser, click on “Tools” in the menu bar, and select “Windows Update”.
If you currenly lack an anti-virus software package, or the software you have installed on your computer has expired, CMU provides the McAfee Enterprise anti-virus software packaged to CMU students at no charge. You can download it from our Software Download Center (requires your Global ID and password to login). You can also stop by the Help Desk, located in the Park Library, to pick up a Virus Scan DVD. Remember to uninstall any other anti-virus software you may have installed before installing McAfee! When installing McAfee, you will automatically be prompted to update it before completing the installation process.
Preparing your Windows-based computer
The following preventative steps from your home internet connection will help you pass your initial on-line computer registration security check, which will occur the first time you connect your computer to CMU’s network:1. Run Windows update

2. Install/update anti-virus software

Optional: Windows 7 Wireless Configuration (Cmich GOLD)
A tool can be run on Windows 7 computers that will automatically configure it to access the secure Cmich GOLD wireless network. This tool can be found in the Software Download Center.Other Computer Operating Systems (Macs, Linux, etc.)
Macs and other computers that are not running a Windows Operating System (OS) will not be prompted to run the same security checks required for Windows OS computers. However, they will still need to be registered on the CMU network with your Global ID and password.When you get to campus
When you first arrive on campus, follow these four easy steps to get on the network:- Plug in your Ethernet cable.
- Turn on your computer.
- Open your web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc), and try connecting to an internet website.
- Follow the directions on the screen to register your computer on the network using your CMU Global ID.
You can obtain your CMU Global ID and password from the Help Desk, available at (989) 774-3662.
You can test your computer from home to see if it will pass the security and registration process by going to http://reg.cmich.edu. You will need your CMU Global ID and password to successfully complete this test.
By following these basic steps you can avoid any delays or problems with accessing Central Michigan University’s network.
