CMU's main campus is conveniently located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, a progressive city of about 25,000 residents in scenic Northern Michigan. To the north and west are the lakes, streams, ski resorts, beaches and magnificent wilderness areas for which Michigan is famous.

Mount Pleasant is a classic college town, with a quaint downtown district which features specialty stores and boutiques of all types. These shops are within walking distance of campus. While this community is fond of its classic appeal, it also is proud of its many modern facilities. New governmental buildings, numerous churches, a modern hospital, a large community library, developed parks and convenient shopping plazas blend comfortably with Mount Pleasant's heritage.

Students entering CMU from other areas will be able to truly experience all four seasons in Mount Pleasant! Our fall semester will begin with warm days and cool nights and gradually turn into the cooler autumn days. Although it may begin before leaving campus, by the time students return from their holiday break in January, campus will be transformed into a winter wonderland. As the semester comes to an end and many students head home for the summer break, we are once again enjoying the warm sunshine and beautiful colors of spring! Activities will take place year round on campus and because nothing is beyond walking distance all students are able to enjoy campus life!

CMU is a multifaceted national university that offers students more than 200 programs at the Bachelor's, Master's, Specialist's, and Doctoral levels.

CMU has 8 distinct colleges in which students can actively pursue specific academic areas of interest.

Central Michigan Normal School opened its doors on Sept. 13, 1892, with 31 students attending classes in a rented building in downtown Mount Pleasant. The school grew quickly, and by 1918 it had become a four-year public college with 450 students attending classes on a campus that consisted of 25 acres and five buildings.

Central Michigan University has evolved into a doctoral research public university that is ranked among the best in the Midwest. CMU provides its growing student population with modern facilities and technology, faculty who are dedicated to student-centered teaching and research, and a selection of more than 170 programs at the bachelor's, master's, specialist's and doctoral levels.

CMU does not require a minimum number of credit hours before you may transfer. If your transcripts from a Michigan community college show that you have completed the MACRAO Agreement, you have satisfied CMU's 30-semester-hour University Program general education requirements. If you have completed fewer than 30 semester hours, we will request that you forward your official high school transcripts along with your admission application.

Courses awarded a grade of C- or higher are transferable to Central Michigan University. Grades and honor points for course work are not officially recorded when the courses are transferred. An official, course-by-course evaluation of transfer credit is completed after acceptance to CMU. An admissions representative can provide you with an unofficial transfer credit evaluation.

CMU's Honors Program is one of Michigan's oldest, founded in 1961. CMU honors students enjoy smaller classes, more personal contact with faculty, dedicated academic advising, and more opportunities to explore their academic interests through research and special projects.

General education at CMU consists of two areas of liberal study and achievement, University Program and Competency Requirements, which are required of all students. A liberal undergraduate education serves as preparation for a thoughtful life and service to the community, as a source of learning from which all other university work must draw and to that work must contribute, and as an opportunity to identify intellectual interests by exploring a variety of disciplines and categories of human knowledge.

The University Program requires at least 27-30 semester hours of coursework in Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Integrative and Area Studies.

CMU expects its graduates to be competent in written English, oral English, and mathematics. All students must demonstrate their competency as detailed in the Competency Requirements.

CMU students are required to sign a major by the time they earn 56 semester hours of credit, which is generally a student's junior year. Once decided, a student contacts their respective departments to sign their major/minor with a member of that department's faculty. Should a student change their mind concerning their field of study, they simply sign the "new" major/minor. The 56-hour policy also applies to new transfer students.

Many CMU students study abroad - and more students are going abroad every semester. CMU has programs in more than 48 countries. Nearly 10 percent of all U.S. college students study in another country. Some students find the experience so valuable - and fun - that they spend more than one semester abroad. CMU boasts of Student Success Centers right in your residence hall complex. Professional academic and career advisors will help you explore a multitude of career opportunities. You will meet with your academic advisor, explore majors, learn about support services, internships and ways to maximize you CMU experience. Advisors can help with academic decision-making, degree requirements, course selection, schedule building, bulletin interpretation, admission to the Teacher Education program, grade point averages, summer transfer courses, and study skills. Advisors also do academic presentations, special event programming and monthly newsletters. Advisors are a great starting point for most issues and on-campus referrals. If you prefer to submit a paper application you may request one by contacting our Admissions Office at 1-888-292-5366 or cmuadmit@cmich.edu. Freshmen must complete an application and submit it to your guidance counselor who will complete the appropriate portion and forward it to CMU along with your transcripts. You must also include your $35 application fee, and have ACT test results sent. Once admitted, final high school transcripts must be received in order to complete the admissions process. Entering freshmen are encouraged to apply early in the fall of the senior year.

Transfer students are encouraged to apply six months prior to the start of the term they wish to enter, and supply CMU with official records from all other institutions attended. Transfer students with less the 30 earned credit hours at the time of application will also be required to supply high school transcripts.

Students are encouraged to bring the above information with them when they visit Central Michigan University. We will review the information and make an admissions decision within a 24-hour period.

A solid academic background will help prepare you for success at the college level. To be ready for this challenge, we stress high academic achievement in several rigorous subjects. Central Michigan University and the Presidents Council of State Colleges and Universities strongly recommend the following high school background:

4 years of:

• English
• Mathematics
• Biological and physical sciences
• History and social sciences

In addition, high school students are strongly encouraged to complete two years of foreign language and two years of electives in fine arts and have one year of hands-on computer experience.

Although an admissions essay is not required, there is an Optional Information section included in the application. Applicants may attach a separate sheet to provide any information we should consider in reviewing your application and records for admission. You may wish to include extracurricular and leadership activities, including employment. You may also wish to explain special situations or circumstances that may have had an impact on your academic record in high school or at another college or university.

Our average incoming freshman has a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and a composite ACT score of 22. At your junior year's end we are hoping you have completed three years of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. We recommend that you take at least three academic classes your senior year in any of the four areas just mentioned. We also consider the trend in your grades. For example, if you didn't do well your freshman year, we hope to see an upward trend in grades since then.

The minimum GPA requirement for transfer students is a 2.5. If you have earned less than 30 credit hours, you will also need to provide us with a copy of your official high school transcript.

You are more than welcome to submit your application for review at any time. CMU grants admission on a rolling basis, meaning that we will admit students for the next available semester of study as applications arrive. For the fall semester of 2008, we highly recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible! You may apply online or we can mail you an application with any other materials you request. You may submit an information request to our office e-mail at cmuadmit@cmich.edu.

Although we don't require an essay for admission consideration we highly encourage students to submit an essay, resume or activities sheet highlighting their high school involvements.

Central Michigan University typically receives 15,000 applications for a freshmen class of 3,700. Prospective freshmen are encouraged to apply early in the fall of their senior year. Transfer students are encouraged to apply six months prior to the start of the term in which they wish to begin their studies at Central Michigan University.

Applicants usually are notified of their admission status within four weeks after we receive a completed application, application fee and academic records. Each application receives individual attention. The admission process takes into account the following: academic achievement in the most demanding subjects, ACT or SAT scores, caliber of high school program, school official recommendations, exceptional talents, involvement beyond the classroom, leadership potential, record of good citizenship, overall academic achievement, pre-CMU course selections and trends in academic progress.

After the four week period of allowing for application review, if you have not received an admissions response you may check on the status of your application by contacting us at 1-888-292-5366 or cmuadmit@cmich.edu. If you choose to check on your status via e-mail, please provide us with your full name and date of birth.

To apply for admission reconsideration you must submit:

1. An official transcript, which includes seventh semester grades.
2. One letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor who can truly talk speak to your chances for academic success.
3. You must write a letter asking for reconsideration due to new grades, etc. and in the letter make sure to include the statement: “I would like to schedule a time to discuss what I might contribute to your campus…”

From the day you send the information out, please allow three weeks for review and processing. If you have any other questions, you may contact the Admissions Office at 888.292.5366.

Students who are accepted to CMU and then wish to have their enrollment deferred to another semester must notify the admissions office of their decision. At that time their file will be updated to reflect the new anticipated enrollment term and they will be sent new information. Students will be required to submit new transcripts for any additionally completed coursework and their admittance will be based on successful completion of those courses.

Academic orientation is offered in a one-day format. The session concentrates on academic advisement and first semester class registration. Students who have decided their field of study will learn about the specific requirements for their degrees, majors, and related minors. All students will receive assistance determining their academic plan from both faculty members and academic advisors. Students will also receive career advising.

CMU is in the Mid American Conference and has Division IA status in the NCAA. We participate in seven intercollegiate sports for men and nine for women. The men's program includes baseball, basketball, cross country, football, indoor and outdoor track, and wrestling. The women's program includes basketball, field hockey, gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball, cross country and indoor and outdoor track. The Office of University Recreation offers a variety of competitive intramural sports for students to participate in. This year's calendar included such sports as: basketball, football, baseball, volleyball, softball, floor hockey, wrestling, and swimming. CMU boasts of one of the largest intramural programs in the country. You can stay involved athletically without being involved in varsity sports.

At Central Michigan University, you'll find hundreds of opportunities to get involved, no matter what your style.

If you like to be in the middle of things, you might be a disc jockey on one of the campus radio stations. You might tour with one of the university choirs or serve in the student government or on your residence hall council.

If you prefer to be in the audience, you can show your spirit at an athletic event, or you can have a front-row seat at one of the university's theatrical productions or School of Music concerts. Or you might stop by the Student Activity Center, play pickup basketball or join an aerobics class.

At Central Michigan, you'll find activities, meetings, and events at all times of the day and night. Some days you'll wonder how you find time to sleep!

CMU is a place where involvement is in. With more than 240 registered student organizations, you'll find many groups that reflect your interests. You'll find activities, meetings, events, and other opportunities for involvement! Some of these include:

• Fraternities and sororities: These social groups promote friendships and public service.
• Academic honoraries: Students with specific academic interests and high levels of academic achievement are invited to join these special societies.
• Residence hall groups: Each residence hall has a group of active volunteers who help plan activities. Each residence hall also elects members to a campus-wide assembly that plans campus events.
• Student government: Central Michigan has an active elected body that represents students.
• Sport and activity programs: If you enjoy playing sports, you'll find a variety of intramural programs and activities to match your interests. Some examples include basketball, bowling, canoeing, cross-country, cycling, football, golf, handball, indoor and outdoor track, power volleyball, racquetball, skiing, softball, swimming and wrestling. We have one of the largest intramural programs in the country. In fact, 55 percent of our students participate in intramural sports.

CMU offers hundreds of meaningful volunteer opportunities that will build your resume while preparing you to become a thoughtful, actively engaged citizen. These experiences are coordinated by the Volunteer Center in the Bovee University Center. A few examples:

• Volunteer Activities: Help support community organizations and schools. For example, a CMU student helps enhance the curriculum in a Mount Pleasant classroom.
• Alternative Breaks: Travel to locations throughout the state, nation, and world each spring, summer, and winter break to assist community-based organizations grappling with poverty, hunger, homelessness, and low-income housing.
• Volunteer events: Get involved through activities such as Special Olympics, Make-A-Difference Day, Adopt-A-Family, America Reads, and The David Garcia Project: Empathy Training program.

The CMU Police Department serves and protects members of the campus community 24 hours per day, seven days a week. The police officers are certified by the State of Michigan. CMU police officers patrol campus buildings and grounds to help ensure a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Twenty-five blue-light emergency phones have been strategically placed on the CMU campus to enable members of the campus community and visitors to report emergencies or crimes in progress or to contact the CMU police for any reason. Each phone is marked with a blue light and offers a direct line to the CMU police dispatcher.

The NightRides program, sponsored by the CMU Police Department, provides students access to fully marked NightRides escort transportation between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To use the service, simply call 774-HELP (4357) or dial 774-3081, and two student patrollers will be dispatched to your location in a vehicle. You also may contact the CMU Police Department using a blue-light phone or from any of the 43 campus pay phones by simply pressing the button labeled CMU Police. The call will be free of charge.

CMU supports the laws of the state of Michigan and strives to create an environment that supports healthy decisions and lifestyles. CMU also respects the rights of individuals who choose to not use alcohol and not experience the impact of others' misuse of alcohol. Each residence hall has floors designated alcohol and tobacco free (ATF).

If you choose to live on an alcohol and tobacco free floor you agree that you will not consume any alcohol or smoke or chew any tobacco at any time, on or off campus. Students who choose to live in the residence halls have the opportunity to pay their room and board in four payments per semester to ease financial burdens. The payment schedule for the current school year is listed here.

For the Fall 2009 semester, tuition for in-state freshmen and new transfer students will be $339 per credit hour. Out-of-state tuition for freshmen and new transfer students will be $789 per credit hour. Generally, an individual must document one year of continual physical presence in the state as only one of the criteria for determining eligibility for resident status. The year to be documented will be one year immediately preceding the first day of classes of the term in question. The year of continuous presence is never the only criterion used for determining resident eligibility and, in itself, will not qualify a student for resident status.

To overcome a presumption of non-resident status, a student must file a properly completed Application for Resident Status and document with clear and convincing evidence that a Michigan domicile has been established. The university reserves the right to audit enrolled or prospective students at any time with regard to eligibility for resident classification and to reclassify students who are registered under an improper resident status.

The Application for Resident Status must be received before the seventh day after the first day of classes during the semester or term in which the individual is first enrolled at CMU.

Filing for financial aid is a very detailed process. Our Financial Aid Advisors will be happy to answer any questions you might have throughout your CMU experience. It is important that you follow application instructions, provide all the information that is requested and meet deadlines.

To begin the financial aid process, you must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is typically available every November or December but cannot be submitted until January 1. For optimal consideration for financial aid, students should file the FAFSA by February 15.

Central Michigan University provides awards based on academic, athletic, talent, and other achievements. CMU offers a comprehensive financial assistance program for students comprised of federal, state, agency, and institutional resources. Incoming freshmen with cumulative GPAs of 3.5 or higher are eligible to compete for our prestigious Centralis Scholarships.

The Scholar Award covers tuition and fees, room and board, and $500 for books. The Gold Award provides full tuition. Both provide for up to 36 credit hours each academic year including summer. Up to 20 of each award are provided annually.

CMU recognizes students for leadership in their schools and communities. The Leader Advancement Scholarship (LAS) is awarded each year to 40 outstanding high school seniors who have distinguished themselves through a record of leadership. The scholarship provides $2,000 for each academic year. The four-year value of the scholarship is $8,000. More information and applications are available on the Leadership Institute’s Web site.

Central Michigan University’s campus residency policy requires that freshmen and sophomore students live in a residence hall. Students who have completed four full-time undergraduate semesters may live in housing of their choice. The sophomore requirement has been waived for the 2008-2009 academic year except for students who are recipients of CMU merit-and talent-based scholarships with a dollar value equal to or greater than $1,500. These students will be required to reside on campus during their sophomore year.

Many lifelong friendships are formed when people live together in a residence hall community. All residence halls are conveniently located on the main campus and are easily accessible to all academic buildings and athletic facilities.

Living on campus puts students at the center of campus life—close to classes, professors, and academic resources. Nearly 6,000 students live in CMU's 22 residence halls, which are among the nicest in the nation. Three new residence halls, Campbell, Kesseler, and Kulhavi, opened in 2003, providing 714 students with apartment style living. Each hall complex includes an academic adviser's office, a 24-hour computer lab and a fitness center. Residence hall suites have separate bedrooms, study areas and bathrooms. Individual rooms are wired for high-speed Internet access. On campus apartments are also available.

A very limited number of rooms have been designated for single occupancy. These rooms are rented at the single room rate of one and one-half times the regular room rate.

If you wish to have a specific roommate, both of you must request each other on application materials. We cannot guarantee residence hall preferences or roommate requests, but we honor them whenever possible. For a better chance of living together, it is best to return roommate applications together.

We begin making housing assignments in the late spring. The first assignments are made to students whose applications arrive in our office first, and we continue to make housing assignments as applications are received.

A residential college provides a residence hall floor for serious students to share not only a living space but also a true community feeling, complete with classroom and study areas.

• Education and Human Services Residential College located in Calkins Hall
• Health Professions Residential College located in Emmons Hall
• School of Music Residential College located in Herrig Hall
• Science and Technology Residential College located in Woldt Hall

Most Honors students live in Larzelere or Trout halls and take advantage of the programs and classes offered there. Leader Advancement Scholarship students live together in Barnes Hall, which is adjacent to the Powers Hall Leadership Institute.

New students are welcome to bring vehicles to campus. CMU, however is very much a pedestrian campus. It takes approximately 25 minutes to walk across the campus. It is roughly a ten minute walk from our residence halls to our academic buildings. All transfer students and incoming freshmen are encouraged to pre-register their vehicles.

The four residential restaurants located throughout the campus provide dining services for students living in the residence halls and off-campus. Flexibility in dining options is available to students through diverse meal plans and multifaceted venues for the use of FLEX Dollars. Off-campus students may enroll in a voluntary dining membership, with a choice of seven options. All students can purchase additional FLEX Dollars.

Extended dining hours accommodate class schedules, and a wide variety of food is served with an "all you care to eat" policy. Special events are planned weekly creating specialty menus, decor and a lot of fun. Students actively participate in the operation of their dining locations through food committees.

Dining options are complimented with the operation of late-night Snack Stores at each Residential dining location, which also accept FLEX Dollars.

Leadership Camp is your opportunity to further express your desire to continue on your path to becoming an effective leader. Two three-day sessions of this program are hosted on CMU’s campus in May.

Central Michigan University provides comprehensive career services and assistance to students and alumni in the process of career decision-making and conducting a job search. Our professional staff works with students from their first days on campus in a variety of areas. Career advisers help students select a major area of study, learn about job opportunities in their field, locate an internship, establish a time frame for their job search, and prepare for their first job interviews. Health Services offers a wide variety of health care services and programs to CMU students, their spouses and other authorized users. There is a charge for the care we provide, but payment is not required on the date of service.

Student Disability Services is located in Park Library 120. Services are provided to students who register with this office and submit the appropriate documentation of their disabilities. Students submitting the appropriate documentation may qualify for TDD, accessible transportation, sign language interpreters, wheelchair-accommodating housing, extended test times, readers for tests, note takers, visual assistance technology, and other reasonable and appropriate accommodations.
