Transfer Academic Orientation

Make it a Smooth Transition
You soon will be taking the next step toward achieving your goal in higher education. Transfer student orientation at Central Michigan University will help you get started on the right foot.

During this required program, you will receive a transfer credit evaluation, learn about your degree requirements, obtain information from academic advisors, and register for first semester classes.

Transfer Academic Orientation
Each transfer student at Central Michigan University is required to attend the academic orientation program, which presents useful information specific to your needs as a transfer student. Your orientation program includes class registration and academic advisement.

During academic orientation you will be advised in individual and group meetings according to your academic program and major interests. Other orientation highlights include:

  •   Registration for first semester classes.
  •   An opportunity to meet with financial advisors.
  •   Photograph for campus ID card.
  •   Explanation of university procedures including parking permits, billing, tuition and banking.

The transfer student program begins with check-in at 9 a.m. and will conclude by 2 p.m. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided.  Click here to view a campus map.

    Reserve Your Orientation Date
Once CMU has received and processed your $175 new student orientation fee payment, you will be able to reserve your date to attend orientation using our online reservation system. You will be required to enter your CMU Global ID and password to access. This reservation process will take you approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

Space for each orientation session is limited and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Submitting a timely reservation will improve your chance of receiving your first choice of dates.

New students who will begin summer classes must attend an orientation session prior to the start of Summer Session I or II.

Confirmation will be sent to your CMU e-mail account listing your orientation date, time and location along with links to other important information relevant to your day's events.

Prior to Orientation
Before attending your academic orientation, you should:

  • Request that your college send an up-to-date college transcript to CMU Admissions Office, Warriner Hall 102, Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI 48859.
  • Write a list of the questions you have about your upcoming CMU enrollment to bring to your orientation.

Orientation Fee and CMU Tuition
The $175 new student orientation fee covers your orientation costs. Please do not bring money to orientation to pay for your tuition. You will receive an electronic billing statement for these expenses after class registration. Tuition cannot be paid before you receive this billing.

If you will be receiving financial assistance, you should follow the instructions provided by the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid. Staff in this office also can answer your financial aid questions.

Community College Students
Community colleges in Michigan have an agreement with four-year universities regarding the transfer of credits needed to satisfy general education requirements. This is referred to as the MACRAO agreement.

Prior to orientation, it is recommended that you meet with the counselor or registrar at your community college and inquire about your status regarding the MACRAO agreement. Completing the MACRAO agreement could reduce the number of general education classes you need to take at CMU.

Music Ensemble Auditions
If you plan to participate in any musical ensembles during fall semester, you should contact the School of Music to arrange an audition.

Instrumental students may call James Batcheller at (989) 774-3317 or e-mail batch1jc@cmich.edu.

Choral students may call Nina Nash-Robertson at (989) 774-3391 or e-mail nashr1nm@cmich.edu.

If you already have been accepted as a music major, you do not need to sign up for a music ensemble audition unless you wish to sing or play an instrument other than your major.

Because preseason marching band camp conflicts with the August orientations, potential marching band members should avoid these orientation sessions.

Family Member Orientation
Your parents, guardians and spouse are encouraged to accompany you to campus for a separate information meeting designed to answer their questions about Central Michigan University. You and your family will attend on the same orientation date.

The orientation for transfer student family members offers an inside look at the campus life, educational opportunities, and challenges that new CMU students experience. Participants will meet together for the first half of the day and will have free time after lunch to explore campus and visit various university service offices.

Family members planning to attend the family orientation program should have their student complete the online reservation process to include their family member(s) attendance. There is no separate fee for family members to attend new transfer student orientation. Family members may purchase their lunch on campus.
