BCA faculty member attends Paris American Academy writing workshop
Broadcast and cinematic arts faculty member Trey Stohlman spent one month at a creative writing workshop in Paris. The workshop, hosted by the Paris American Academy, featured a variety of sessions from fiction to poetry to screenwriting. Stohlman presented one of his pieces at Le Café Universel, a performance café in Paris, during the workshop. The piece was later featured in a compilation book created by the university.
CMU receives gold-level veteran-friendly ranking
CMU is one of 65 schools to receive a veteran-friendly ranking from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency for 2016-17. The program recognizes higher learning institutions for dedication to educational benefits for veterans. Of the 65 schools, CMU is one of 44 that received gold-level status.
CMU alumnus offers educational expertise on CNBC
CMU alumnus Dave Hornak recently spoke on CNBC's "On the Money" about the benefits of year-round education systems. Hornak, a graduate of the College of Education and Human Services, is currently the executive director of the National Association for Year-Round Education. The organization advocates for longer academic years to improve student success.
Central Michigan Life announced as finalist for Newspaper Pacemaker Award
Central Michigan Life was recently announced as a finalist for a Pacemaker Award by the Associated Collegiate Press. The student publication received the award in 2015 for excellence in journalism, graphics and leadership.
CMU Alternative Breaks program earns Innovation Award honorary mention
The CMU Alternative Breaks program received an honorary mention for the NASPA Assessment, Evaluation and Research Knowledge Community Innovation Award by the NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. The program, led by faculty member Eric Buschlen, received the award for its unique approach to student learning.
Faculty member named to Journal of Political Science Education editorial team
CMU political science faculty member J. Cherie Strachan has been named to the Journal of Political Science Education editorial team. Strachan will serve as an editor to the Books, Teaching, Tools and Educational Resources section. Her appointment will run from 2016 to 2020.
College of Medicine student elected member of Michigan Academy of Family Physicians
Olivia Bolen, a College of Medicine student, was elected the student member of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians at its annual meeting on July 12. Bolen will be the only student member of this academy that serves the needs of more than 4,200 family physicians in the state of Michigan.
Professor of composition conducts concert at international music festival in South Korea
School of Music faculty member David Gillingham traveled to Jeju, South Korea, in August for a special performance. Gillingham rehearsed for and conducted a concert with the Republic of Korea Naval Band at the International Wind Ensemble Festival. The band performed Gillingham's music at this international festival, including his marimba concerto and bass trombone concerto.
BCA faculty member wins Telly Bronze Award
Eric Limarenko, a broadcast and cinematic arts faculty member, won a Telly Bronze Award. His award-winning video, titled "Waiting the Rain," features a choreographic piece by CMU dance students.
