Basic Disaster Supplies Kit

How to be Prepared When Disaster Strikes

Food Needs

o   3 day supply, per person
o   Non-perishable items
o   Choose salt free crackers, whole grain cereals, and canned food with high liquid content
o   Find alternatives to cook food: grills, chafing dishes, fireplaces
o   Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed for as long as possible
“When in doubt, throw it out!”


o   Fire extinguisher
o   Matches
o   First aid kit
o   Extra prescription medications, glasses/contacts
o   Battery or hand crank radio
o   Flashlight with extra batteries
o   Whistle
o   Dust mask
o   Wrench to turn off utilities
o   Copies of important documents for insurance purposes
o   Moist towelettes/garbage bags
o   Manual can opener
o   Feminine hygiene supplies
o   Extra cash
o   Sleeping bags/blankets
o   Extra clothes: (jacket, long pants, etc.)


o   1 gallon of water per person, per day
o   3 day supply
o   Store in cool, dark place
o   Don’t open until needed
o   Water needs double in warm temperature
o   Boil contaminated water 1 full minute for safe consumption
o   Never ration water, you can always find more

First Aid Kit

o   Two pairs of Latex or other sterile gloves
o   Sterile dressings to stop bleeding
o   Cleansing agent/soap and antibiotic towelettes
o   Antibiotic ointment
o   Burn ointment
o   Adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes
o   Eye wash solution to flush the eyes or as general decontaminant
o   Thermometer
o   Prescription medications (rotate to account for expiration dates)
o   Prescribed medical supplies (glucose, blood pressure monitoring equipment)
o   Non-prescription drugs (aspirin, anti-diarrhea, medication, antacid, laxative)
o   Scissors, tweezers, tube of petroleum jelly or lubricant


o   Identify shelter for pets
o   Have up to date tags with current information
o   Attach evacuation site address if separated
o   Wet food is better than dry
o   3 day supply of medications
o   Have copies of medical records
