Program Prioritization Timeline

2016-presentEnrollments have been declining since 2011. As enrollments since 2016 have declined, the revenue from tuition declined by 21%. 
January 2020Trustees provide request for identification of marquee programs, or programs where there is strong demand for the program, where market is not yet saturated, that students find desirable, and that are sustainable economically and in light of our strategic pathways. Trustees asked us to consider what academic areas and programs will help CMU build enrollment and innovation.
August 2020President and Provost visit college start-up meetings and share information about anticipated declining appropriations and probable additional budget reductions from the state.
September 2020Prioritization rubrics provided to instructional units (departments and programs), Board of Trustees, and service centers reporting to the Provost; rubrics shared with other campus divisions for their use and/or adaptation; Academic Planning and Analysis holds data sessions for departments. The purpose of the rubric is to ensure faculty and staff would have a strong voice in the review process.
October 2020Information sessions provided for department chairs to address questions about the rubric.
November 2020Information sessions provided for department chairs to address questions about the rubric.
December 2020Departments and programs submit prioritization proposals to college deans. Service centers/non-instructional centers submit prioritization proposals.
January 2021Deans and Academic service center leadership submit recommendations to the Provost.
February 2021President, President's Cabinet, and Provost review proposals. Budget Priorities Committee to review and advise.
March 2021Budget Priorities Committee reviews and advises on recommendations.
April 2021Process updates shared with the Board of Trustees; Budget Priorities Committee reviews and advises Provost on recommendations.

BPC answered the following questions by identifying up to four program or program areas. from the 18 programs the BPC has been asked to review.

  1. Which undergraduate programs do you feel have the strongest appeal to degree completers (non-traditional students with some college credit who are typically working full time)?
  2. Which undergraduate programs do you believe could best attract UG's if marketed directly to high school students?
  3. Which graduate programs do you believe could best attract UG'S if marketed directly to high school students?
  4. Which are strong niche programs that can help CMU promote and reinforce brand awareness?
  5. Which program areas have strong potential for credential / certificate / professional development offerings, short or formal degree programs?
