Cooperating Teachers
The importance of the Cooperating Teacher’s role in clinical experiences cannot be over-emphasized. The collaborative efforts between schools and us are critical to the success of field experiences. We value and appreciate the support provided to our students by the Cooperating Teacher throughout the training process.
Criteria to be a Cooperating Teacher
We ask that Cooperating Teachers have demonstrated mentorship dispositions, exceptional communication skills, and experience providing adults feedback for improvement. Teachers must also be sensitive to diverse perspectives, involved in educational committees or professional advisory councils, and have a valid Teaching Certificate with three years of successful teaching experience (minimum) or recommendation by Central Michigan University faculty. Approval by the building administrator is required.
Benefits of Hosting
Cooperating Teachers who open their classroom to teacher candidates benefit through the iterative process of planning, teaching, and reflecting alongside their candidates as they explore the intricacies of education for the first time.
Mentor teachers who give back to the profession and help the next generation of educators through clinical fieldwork can earn SCECHs or tuition reimbursement through Central Michigan University. Additionally, many mentors will document their service on their annual evaluation as a record of going above and beyond in amenity to the profession.
