Katsina Dolls of the Hopi Tradition

In recognition and honor of Native American Heritage month, the Baber Room Gallery presents an exhibition of Central Michigan University’s collection of twenty-six Katsina Dolls made by Hopi artists. Often called visible prayers, books in wood, and benevolent spirit beings, these dolls hold rich story. This collection was a generous gift from Robert J. Leander to CMU’s permanent art collection and marks the ten-year anniversary of their first exhibition with CMU. This collection celebrates the richness, beauty, and significance of the katsina doll tradition that remains alive in contemporary Hopi culture.
