CMU's First Lady Elizabeth G. Ross:
As a single mother I went back to school to get my masters degree and later funded my child's education, so I know first-hand the challenges and stressors of this daunting task. However, I am a believer in the "transformative powers" of education, especially higher education. The benefits from a college degree never cease, it is a gift that keeps on giving. Education improves the lives of those we touch and the communities in which we live and work.
The financial assistance provided by the scholarship from Women's Connection can make the difference in a student staying in school or having to drop out. I encourage each of you to help us help a CMU student.
Elizabeth G. Ross,
Women's Connection Chairperson
About CMU Women's Connection
Central Michigan University Women's Connection held its first program in the spring of 2004 in the Metro Detroit area. Women's Connection was created to provide a platform for alumnae and friends to be actively engaged in the advancement of the University and to promote and enhance the learning opportunities for CMU students. With its increasing popularity, in addition to a Southeast Michigan event, these annual luncheon programs are also held in the West Michigan, Mid-Michigan and Great Lakes Bay Regions of the state.
To that end, Women's Connection augments the Alumni Association in its efforts to serve, involve and inform the alumni by providing a forum for alums and friends to reconnect and network; a forum to attract female supporters to enhance their interests in and support of CMU; and embracing compassion by supporting the needs and challenges of its students through scholarship.
In keeping with its mission, in 2007 CMU Women's Connection Scholarship fund was established. This is a endowed renewable scholarship given to a single-parent student and/or a student from a single-parent home. The supporters of CMU Women's Connection had the foresight to embrace compassion and created a gift that keeps on giving. Education transforms lives; this scholarship helps CMU students realize their educational goals.
WOMEN'S CONNECTION SCHOLARSHIP
Supported by nearly 2500 individual CMU donors (as of September, 2017), this scholarship was established in 2007 to support part-time or full-time CMU students who are a single parent or a student from a single-parent household. The financial challenges faced by single parents today often result in sacrificing the pursuit of a college education. It is our sincere wish that we assist someone to fulfill his or her desire for a higher education who might not otherwise be able to make this a reality.
