Recognized by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters as College Television Station of the Year for 16 consecutive years, MHTV is a 24-hour station that is cablecast to the Central Michigan University campus network on channel 26.2, and the Mount Pleasant community on Charter cable channel 189. All MHTV content is written, produced, directed, and edited by the students of the School of Broadcast & Cinematic Arts. Program content varies widely, and provides students with a multitude of opportunities to learn from real-world, hands-on production experience. Students may also choose to learn the administrative side of television by serving in one of the many MHTV Executive Staff positions within the organization.

Programming Opportunities
Among the many production opportunities provided to students are our flagship award-winning programs, Sports Central, and Central View. Each show utilizes widely different production techniques, allowing students to focus on the type of experience they want to gain.

Sports Central provides students with opportunities to cover local sporting events from either side of the camera. Whether reporting, interviewing, shooting, editing, directing, or hosting the show back at the studio, each student has limitless experience at their fingertips. Crews produce new 30-minute episodes on a bi-weekly schedule, as well as create exclusive online content that is posted throughout the semester. After developing their skillsets, many Sports Central crew members are hired by CMU Athletics to work with both ESPN3, and the Chippewa Sports Network.

Central View is a 30-minute magazine show consisting of short, 3-5 minute segments of varying subjects. Pieces are produced by teams of on-camera talent, producers, shooters, and editors, and allow students to tackle topics of interest to them. New episodes are produced on a bi-weekly schedule, and provide students with a multitude of hands-on opportunities that support the skills they’ve covered in the classroom.

In addition to our flagship programs, students who have worked on an existing MHTV show for at least two semesters, and have completed BCA 440 (Introduction to Cinematic Production and Postproduction), can develop their own show concept and pitch it to the MHTV Executive Staff for consideration. If the idea is strong and well thought out, a pilot episode is granted, and production begins. Successful pilots are green-lit for production, while unsuccessful ones are critiqued for required changes or improvements.
