Admission to Bachelor of Fine Arts programs
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program at CMU is designed to prepare students for the creative workforce or to transition into a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program.
All BFA programs at CMU require an application and portfolio review before a student can begin the program.
Following admission to the BFA Program, candidates meet with an assigned faculty advisor who will supervise and assist them through the program and provide guidance in preparation for faculty critiques, final thesis, exhibition, and graduation.
As part of the requirements for earning the BFA, each student develops a body of work and a portfolio with a focused direction which reflects a comprehensive understanding of artistic concepts and a critical approach to making. Upper level studio courses offer guidance and support as students individually pursue their own research and projects in part of the required coursework. A year of foundations coursework is currently required to continue into the Studio Arts or Graphic Design program, but may be waived through submission to a portfolio review process conducted by the department chair and foundations committee.
