A Unique, Accredited Program
The journalism program at CMU is the only one of its kind in Michigan with majors in advertising, online journalism and photojournalism, and concentrations in news editorial and public relations.
Learning Through The Program
You will gain knowledge in classroom theory and real-world skills with hands-on experiences and service learning from faculty members who are recognized for their professional and academic experiences and associations with media around the world.
Core courses emphasize understanding mass communications and related issues, ethics and trends, gathering data and writing, doing multimedia productions, and understanding visual communication. To get the most out of your education, you will have access to state-of-the-art computer facilities.
Beyond The Classroom
You can begin developing your skills with CMU’s national award-winning newspaper, Central Michigan Life, as early as your freshman year – no experience necessary. CM Life staff members have graduated with a 100 percent career placement rate for the last three decades.

Employers expect journalism graduates to have at least one internship, so the journalism department will help arrange an internship to match your career interests. There are internship opportunities with state and national media agencies, and including the China Daily.
CMU journalism graduates find jobs in news reporting, magazine and feature writing, photojournalism, public relations and advertising. The program also benefits students going into fields that require information gathering, precision writing and visual communication skills including law, politics, consulting, health education, business, and environmental and sports studies.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook for all occupations through the year 2014, the employment of writers and editors is expected to grow 9 to 17 percent. The employment of advertising, marketing, promotions and public relations professionals is expected to increase 18 to 26 percent.
