Transfer Information

General Information:

The Department of Journalism at CMU is one of two accredited journalism units in Michigan. It provides each student with a solid foundation in the liberal arts and sciences and with the professional courses required for success in the media and media-related industries.

Students majoring in journalism may choose from four concentrations: news-editorial, public relations, advertising and photojournalism. Students may minor in journalism, in public affairs (journalism and political science), in media design, production and technology, or in advertising (advertising and marketing). Many students major in journalism and minor in a discipline such as history, political science, English or Broadcast & Cinematic Arts.

Preparation for Transfer Students:

Students should declare a journalism major or minor as early as possible in their academic careers. It is recommended that most, if not all, journalism courses be taken at CMU. If students wish to transfer major-related coursework from other colleges, it is best that the transfer credit be obtained in courses such as a general survey of mass media (JRN 101 equivalent) or JRN 202 (writing for the mass media) which is transferable only from four-year schools unless approved by the department.

Transfer Credit Guidelines:

Courses at the 300-level or above from two-year institutions are NOT transferable to the Department of Journalism. The department will accept for transfer credit any course (lower than the 300-level) that is a reasonable match for the course as it is taught in the department. Credit is the prerogative of the department, and students seeking transfer credit must make available to the department syllabi for the courses for which the credit is sought. The department will determine whether to grant transfer credit. No credit is given for a professional/skills course that involves writing for the student newspaper, yearbook or other non-professionally-edited publication.
