YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR DATE OF GRADUATION ON ALL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS. SCHOLARSHIPS ARE OPEN TO ALL MAJORS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM. DEADLINE: MARCH 17 AT 5 P.M.

Deadline for all scholarship applications: 5 p.m., Monday, March 17, 2014

All scholarship applications require:

  • Recommendation forms from one Central Michigan University Department of Journalism faculty member (who is not on the scholarship committee) AND one recommendation of your choice (recommendation forms are available above)
  • Your official or unofficial CMU transcript
  • Your current resume

Additional applicant criteria for each scholarship are listed below:​

Dennis L. Durkee Endowment (one award of $500)                                     

  • Current full-time CMU students with a signed major on file
  • Intends to pursue a career in journalism
  • Sophomore status or higher with overall GPA of at least 3.0
  • Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • One-page essay demonstrating financial need and merit

Outstanding Senior (one award of $1,000)

  • Signed journalism major/minor must be on file
  • Full-time student status as a senior
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated merit                                                                                               

Jack and Nancy Benedict Endowment (one award of $500)

  • Signed journalism or business major
  • Full-time student status as a senior
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated scholarly achievement                                                                                         

Friends of Journalism (one award of $1,000)

  • Signed major/minor on file
  • Full-time student status
  • Journalism GPA of at least 3.0
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated merit and financial need

Suzanne Nichols Endowed Scholarship (up to two awards of at least $750)

  • Intends to pursue a career in journalism
  • Signed journalism major/minor must be on file
  • Full-time student status as a senior
  • Journalism GPA of 3.0

Leadership Award (one award of $1,000)

  • Signed journalism major form must be on file
  • Leadership in/out of Department of Journalism including groups, events, volunteerism, associations 
  • Full-time student status
  • Experience with leadership at CM Life and/or Grand Central Magazine or similar field of study
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated leadership

Pam Klein Scholarship (one award of $1,500)

  • Signed major/minor form must be on file
  • Full-time student
  • At least two semesters of significant contribution as writer or editor at CM Life
  • Intend to pursue career focused on writing (not photography, design or broadcast)
  • Avid reader of the news media
  • Non-smoker and non-user of tobacco products
  • Demonstrated curiosity about how things work; demonstrated tough fairness and fair toughness; demonstrated tenacity to do what's right, not what's easy; demonstrated clear writing that cuts through the clutter and gets to the meat of an issue; demonstrated not only high journalistic standards, but also serves as a role model and/or mentor for other journalism students
  • Minimum 3.0 overall GPA and 3.3 JRN GPA
  • Previous recipients may apply

Journalism Scholar of the Year (one award of $1,000)

  • Signed journalism major form must be on file
  • Student's overall GPA and journalism GPA will be strong considerations
  • Full-time student status
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated scholarly achievement

Jim Wojcik Scholarship (up to two awards of at least  $600 each)

  • A signed major/minor form must be on file
  • Full-time student status
  • GPA of at least 3.0
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • Experience at CM Life is mandatory
  • One-page essay based on the criteria

Study Abroad Scholarship (one award of $500)

  • Confirmation the applicant has studied or plans to study abroad
  • Full-time student status
  • Preference will be given to a student who studies in Singapore
  • One-page essay explaining why you qualify for the study abroad award. In your essay, please explain where you have studied abroad and when, or your future plans for study abroad​.

Robert E. McCabe Scholarship (up to two awards of at least $1,250)

  • Confirmation the applicant intends to pursue a career in journalism and or broadcasting fields
  • Signed major/minor must be on file
  • Applicant's essay of merit and financial need
  • Full-time student status as a senior
  • Journalism GPA of at least 3.2
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • Financial need; FAFSA form must be on file with the Financial Aid Office
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated merit and your financial need

Fitzpatrick/Woods Scholarship (one award of $1,500)

  • Confirmation the applicant intends to pursue a career in journalism
  • Signed major/minor must be on file
  • Full-time student status as a senior
  • Involvement in activities outside the department (organized groups, clubs, community volunteer programs and events)
  • Experience in the field of study (working for an online news or feature organization, newspaper, television station, etc.)
  • One-page essay based on criteria
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • A personal interview with the scholarship committee may be requested

Gilbert O. Maienknecht Scholarship (one award of $1,000)

  • Confirmation applicant intends to pursue a career in journalism and/or broadcasting fields
  • Signed major/minor must be on file
  • Full-time student status as a senior
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • Financial need is a major, but not an exclusive, consideration
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated merit and your financial need

Dennis Jeffers Scholarship (one award of $600)

  • A signed journalism major form must be on file
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • One-page essay explaining why you merit this award

Matt Dobek Endowment (up to four awards of at least $1,000)

  • A signed journalism major form must be on file
  • Full-time student status
  • Students must demonstrate the need for financial support for travel to conferences, internships, and/or study abroad
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • One-page essay expressing need based on the endowment criteria

Roger and Lisa Hart Scholarship (one award of $1,000)

  • Offered to journalism majors who have worked at CM Life for at least one semester
  • Full-time student status
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated scholarly achievement

Opperman Public Relations Internship Endowment (one award of $1,000)

  • Confirmation the applicant intends to pursue a career in public relations
  • The internship must either be a graduation requirement for the recipient or the recipient must ​be returning to academic studies at CMU after completing the internship
  • Applicants must be a signed journalism or integrative public relations major
  • GPA of at least 3.0
  • Previous recipients may apply
  • One-page essay of merit based on the criteria of the scholarship

Dr. Michael J. Petrick Journalism Scholarship (one award of $1,000)

  • Offered to journalism news-editorial major
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • One-page essay explaining how you have demonstrated scholarly achievement
