Yu Yilei, the sports editor of the China Daily, the only national English-language newspaper in China, is spending Spring 2010 as the CMU-Dow China Daily Scholar in the Department of Journalism.
Yilei joined the China Daily in August 1998 as a sports writer after he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Xi’an Foreign Languages University.
In April 2003, he was appointed deputy sports editor and deputy director of the sports group, roles he occupied until February 2009 when he was appointed sports editor and acting director of the sports group.
He has covered sports and coordinated coverage of various sports, including tennis, baseball, motor racing and baseball. He says the highlight of his career was leading a team of 16 reporters in the daily production of The Olympian, the official newspaper of the Olympic Games in Beijing in summer 2008.
His current position involves him in publishing sports specials, including those for the Volvo Ocean Race, the Qingdao International Regatta (sailing), the Volvo China Open (golf), the China Open (tennis) and the Race of Champions (auto racing).
The designated correspondent for LEN magazine, the official publication for the governing body of European aquatics, Yilei enjoys swimming, fencing, tennis and travel.
