CMU School of Music Professor Returns to the Stage
It has been a year and nine months since Dr. Alexandra Mascolo-David, Central Michigan University School of Music’s Professor of Piano, underwent brain aneurism surgery. This week, she returns to the CMU stage with the CMU Orchestra for her first public performance since late 2010.

In October of 2010, just one month before her surgery, Dr. Mascolo-David released a CD featuring the Kalamazoo Symphony that included all four of Fancisco Mignone’s Brazilian Fantasies for piano and orchestra. She had hoped to promote that work through performances and presentations, but due to her surgery, she never got that opportunity, until now.

On Thursday, September 27 at 8 p.m. in Staples Family Concert Hall, the CMU Orchestra, directed by Dr. José Luis-Maurtua, presents an all-Latin concert that features Francisco Mignone’s
Fantasia Brasileira No. 4 for piano and orchestra with Dr. Mascolo-David as soloist. The concert, she says, “promises to be fun, vivacious and fiery!”

Mignone’s
Fantasia Brasileira No. 4 for piano and orchestra is the most mature of the four piano concertos and indicative of film music from the ‘30s and ‘40s, with a strong Afro-Brazilian influence including complex and lively rhythms.

Later this fall, Dr. Mascolo-David will perform CMU Professor David Gillingham’s
Concerto for Piano and Percussion Orchestra with the CMU Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Andrew Spencer, on Tuesday, October 23 at 8 p.m. in Staples Family Concert Hall.

The Gillingham Concerto also figures into Dr. Mascolo-David’s next recording project, which will include works by Daniel McCarthy, José-Luis Maúrtua, David Gillingham and others.

Both concerts are free and open to the public. More information.
