41st Annual Jazz Weekend
The Central Michigan University School of Music announces
all-star saxophonist Frank Tiberi as the 2014 CMU Jazz Weekend Guest Artist. Next year’s event will be held on February 6-7.
Mr. Tiberi will serve both as guest clinician and featured soloist
for Jazz Weekend XLI. As guest clinician, he will host a master class on
Friday, February 7, 2014 for visiting high school jazz bands and combos. During
the day, these ensembles, from over 50 school districts state wide, perform for
judges’ comments and trophies in five different classes. Mr. Tiberi’s featured performance concludes
Jazz Weekend that evening at 8 p.m. in Plachta Auditorium.
A child prodigy, Mr. Tiberi began playing professionally at
the age of 13, touring with Bob Chester, Benny Goodman, and Urbie Green. Early highlights of his career also include
playing with Dizzy Gillespie, learning to play the flute on his own, studying
bassoon with Sol Schoenbach of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and playing as a
doubler in Broadway musicals. He then
settled into the reed section of the Woody Herman Band in 1969 where he
performed as featured soloist, section leader, arranger, music director and
ultimately leader of the Herman Band in 1987.
Currently, Mr. Tiberi is on the woodwind faculty at Berklee
College of Music in Boston as an associate professor. He teaches improvisation to performance
students while continuing to direct the Woody Herman Orchestra. For more on
