The Harlem Quartet

The Harlem Quartet plays the music of Wynton Marsalis, Billy Strayhorn and more. The Harlem Quartet's debut recording, Take the 'A' Train, was released on September 25th at Carnegie Hall in New York. The recording features the works of Wyton Marsalis, Billy Strayhorn, Joaquín Turina, and Guido Lópes-Gavilán. The Harlem Quartet, comprised of First Place Laureates of the Sphinx Competition, seeks to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers. The project was created through the partnership of White Pine Music with the Sphinx Organization.

The Harlem Quartet, all first-place laureates of the Sphinx Competition, gave a spirited rendition of a Paul Chihara arrangement called “Ellington Fantasy: Take the A Train.” The work, based on the music by Billy Strayhorn, had fine contributions from Ilmar Gavilan, the first violinist.

Reviews

  • “These are fine, fresh, exciting performances by an excellent ensemble that has the chops to pull off the technical challenges and enough interpretive skill to truly inhabit the music.
...an important recording or an important work.”
