Dr. Lopes began his career with Central Michigan University in 2006 as an Assistant Professor in the Physician Assistant Program. He earned his Doctor of Health Science from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Master of Science in Technology Education from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois; and Bachelor of Science in Medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He received training as a Physician Assistant in the United States Air Force.

Prior to joining CMU, Dr. Lopes served as a Physician Assistant in the British National Health Service (two years), as a Physician Assistant in southeastern Illinois (13 years), and as a Primary Care Physician Assistant in the United States Air Force until his retirement in 1991.

Dr. Lopes holds a special interest in health policy, compliance issues, rural and agricultural health, and occupational medicine.
