Sport Management Academic Fund (SMAF)
A newly created fundraising arm for Central Michigan’s Sport Management Program, the Sport Management Academic Fund, otherwise known as SMAF, is designed to provide financial support for student scholarships, general operating budgets, special projects, and other ways to enhance the overall experience of Central Michigan’s Sport Management students. Last semester, the fall of 2011, current graduate students within the Sport Management Program raised over $3,000 as the starting seed for this fund.
As the cost of attending college continues to increase, it is critical that we also continue to seek philanthropic support from our friends and alumni to improve our program into one of the category of elite programs in the country. We envision this fund providing assistance for special things as travel expenses for students to and from national conferences, or allocating some of the fund into an annual based scholarship to a deserving student. These types of things will help attract prospective students to CMU and raise the bar for an already successful program.

The Passion Projects
Current Central Michigan University undergraduates in the sports management program take on the responsibilities of a sports industry as well as become a vehicle for social change in community improvement as participants of the Passion Project. Each semester new groups of students will be challenged to introduce service learning projects to solve a social problem of their choice. Incorporating students' strong, personal interests into a project that benefits society makes the Passion Project a significant initiative of the CGSL.

In 2003, the Michigan High School Athletic Association took the lead as one of the first state interscholastic organizations to survey members about their experiences with participation fees. In the initial survey, only 22.6% of schools reported that they charged a participation fee. Seven years later in 2010, the number of schools that charged a fee rose to 47% with an average fee per sport of $71.87.
Participation fees and rising budget cuts are just two of the many issues plaguing the current high school sport scene. In November, the Center for Global Sport Leadership conducted a statewide survey of high schools on critical issues that they face on a daily basis. Of the over 120 respondents, athletic directors answered that finances, coaching, parents, participation rates, and facilities are the five largest problems today in Michigan interscholastic sport.
To combat these issues, it is important for athletic directors to unite and strategically plan for solutions. On April 11th, 2011, the Center for Global Sport Leadership at Central Michigan University hosted the first part of the town hall meeting series focused on action to discuss the critical issues in high school sport.
Sport Leadership Course at Disney
The Center for Global Sport Leadership and the College of Health Professions will be offering graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to take leadership courses at Disney in Orlando Florida. The course will be March 4-9, 2013 (spring break) and will count for 3 credits. An informational meeting will be held on October 12, 2012, at 3 PM in HP 2261.
