Summer Music Institute is going VIRTUAL!

Join us online for mix-and-match sessions on unique music topics, attend a Q&A chat with current music majors, and spend time refining instrument-specific skills. We are also offering special chat sessions for students and teachers throughout the afternoon.

Students
 grab your instrument and join us during instrument-specific morning sessions taught by our CMU faculty. During the afternoon choose between a variety of general music topics including jazz, composition, breathing, and even The Beatles! These virtual sessions are designed for high school students and incoming college freshman, however advanced middle school students are welcome to join. 


Interested in studying music in college? 
Get the inside scoop on what life is like for music majors at the School of Music. Join CMU students Taylor Huitema, Kaylee Bernard, and Andrea Foerster along with Professor and Assistant Director MaryBeth Minnis for a special Q&A chat session. 

Teachers
have the opportunity to observe any of the instrument-specific sessions, attend general music topics, and participate in vital chat sessions with CMU faculty and colleagues from around the region. Make sure to check out our exclusive Sessions for Music Teachers located below!

9:00 | Air Support is Your Superpower!
Learn how to use your air for better tone, articulation, and dynamics.

10:00 | Slaying the Technical Beast
Get the inside scoop on how to play fast, utilize alternate fingerings, and more! Be prepared to participate- music will be sent to you after registration.

11:00 | Playing Expressively with Vibrato
Learn about vibrato, how to practice it, and how to use it. Sign up for this session if you would like to be a spotlight performer and work on your vibrato during the session with Dr. Binkley. Other attendees will be encouraged to participate in real time at home.

2:00 | Getting Started with Oboe Reedmaking
Learn about crowing and basic reed adjustment using items from around the house! Participants will be sent a supply list after registration.

3:00 | Finishing Finesse (for Advanced Reedmakers only)
Participants must have their own reed making tools (knife, plaque, cutting block, sharpening method) and will need “reeds in progress” or reeds that need adjustment for this session.

Learn tips for audition success.

A wide variety of topics will be covered, including equipment, repertoire, repair/maintenance, and others. Questions encouraged.

Learn how a good embouchure, air support and the right fingerings can give you confidence playing bassoon! For bassoonists who are just starting out or have only been playing a year or so.

Learn techniques for cleaning up those tricky fingering passages.

Topics will include: mouth pieces, reeds, neck straps, taking private lessons, building a skill set, developing technique, learning etudes, listening, and experiencing great literature.
