Welcome to the Thirty-Fifth Annual Central Michigan High School Honors Band!  The entire schedule of activities will take place in our state-of-the-art music building culminating in a performance in the Staples Family Concert Hall at 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 10.

If you are interested in auditioning, please send a recording (cd, MP3 sound file, or video) containing material outlined in the enclosed fact sheet.  Please be aware that the quality of the recording will play a major role in the selection and placement process.  The recordings will be evaluated by CMU faculty who will make all decisions regarding participation.

Please note the postmark deadline of October 25, 2019, for the Application and Recording.


Chris Chapman, Director of Bands, CMU

Dr. Christopher Chapman is the new Director of Bands for the Central Michigan University School of Music, where he conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and coordinates the wind band conducting area. His ensembles have gained notoriety and praise from composers and audiences alike and have been featured in performance sites from Carnegie Hall to concert halls on the west coast of the United States as well as Japan, China and Taiwan. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Chapman holds degrees in music from The Ohio State University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of Washington.

How to Apply

Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion students in grades 9-12 are able to participte. To audition, students will provide a recording of the audition material listed below, and apply online using the registration link above.

Audition Recording Options

  1. CD – Mail CD and Application to:

Audition Material
  1. The audition recording should include a solo, an etude, an excerpt, or any combination of these. Solos for this year’s solo and ensemble festival are acceptable on every instrument.
  2. Scales should include the following: F, Bb, Eb, C, G Major; d, g, a minor or as many of these as possible.
Flutists, who wish to be considered for piccolo, should include that instrument on this recording in addition to the flute.

Percussionists should include the following: A solo or an etude on snare drum; a solo or etude on a mallet instrument; and a solo or an etude on timpani

Audition results will be sent no later than Friday, November 1, 2019.
