Welcome to the Thirty-Sixth Annual Central Michigan High School Honors Band! The entire schedule of activities will take place in our state-of-the-art music building culminating in a performance in the
Staples Family Concert Hall at 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 14.
If you are interested in auditioning, please send a recording (unlisted YouTube video) containing material outlined in the above application form. Please be aware that the quality of the recording will play a major role in the selection and placement process. The recordings will be evaluated by CMU faculty who will make all decisions regarding participation.
Please note the postmark deadline of
October 15, 2021, for the Application and Recording.
CONCERT INFORMATION: The 2021 CMU Honor Band Concert will take place at 4:00 PM on Sunday, November 14 in Staples Family Concert Hall. Due to Covid-19 regulations on campus, each high school student can have 3 guests in the concert hall for the performance. Please note that everyone must wear a mask when inside university buildings.
FEES: There is no fee to audition; the cost to participate if selected is $15 per student. Fee will be collected at the first rehearsal, cash or check only. Checks should be made payable to CMU.
COVID-19 REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE INFORMATION: We will be following the most recent recommendations and guidelines mandated by CMU. Please note that everyone must wear a mask when inside university buildings. Honor Band participants must also wear a mask when NOT playing during rehearsals and the performance.
NOTE: Bell covers are required for woodwind and brass instruments.
Chris Chapman, Director of Bands, CMU
Dr. Christopher Chapman is the Director of Bands for the Central Michigan University School of Music, where he conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and coordinates the wind band conducting area. His ensembles have gained notoriety and praise from composers and audiences alike and have been featured in performance sites from Carnegie Hall to concert halls on the west coast of the United States as well as Japan, China and Taiwan. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Chapman holds degrees in music from The Ohio State University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of Washington.
James Batcheller, Associate Professor of Bands, CMU
James Batcheller is a member of the conducting faculty and Associate Director of Bands at Central Michigan University. He teaches courses in conducting, music education, and rehearsal methods, is director of the Chippewa Marching Band, and conductor of the Wind Symphony. Dr. Batcheller has also served on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma and was Director of Bands at Great Falls High School in Great Falls, Montana. He has published articles in the Journal of Band Research and the Instrumentalist magazine, and is a contributing researcher for the Teaching Music Through Performance In Band series of reference books. New orchestrations by Dr. Batcheller have been performed by stars of opera and the Broadway stage including Darius de Haas, Sarah Uriarte Berry, and CMU’s own Teri Hansen, and by ensembles including the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
