Piano

BME, BA, and BS degrees

Repertoire must include:

  • Two pieces in contrasting style (one must be memorized)
  • All major and harmonic minor scales, arpeggios, four octaves, hands together
  • Sight-reading to be selected at the audition

Repertoire for the BME, BA and BS degrees should be at the level of, but not restricted to:
Classical pieces: may include Kuhlau, Diabelli and Clementi sonatinas/sonatas,       Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven sonatas and Beethoven's Bagatelles.

Romantic pieces: may include Chopin's Preludes, Mazurkas, Waltzes, Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, Grieg's Lyric Pieces, and Schumann's Scenes from Childhood.

Impressionistic/Contemporary pieces: may include works by Debussy, Bartok's     Romanian Dances, Copland's Cat and Mouse, Shostokovich, and Khatchaturian.

BM degree

Repertoire (performed from memory) must include:
  • One Prelude and Fugue from J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier
  • The first or last movement of a Beethoven, Haydn, Hummel, or Mozart sonata
  • One piece from either the Romantic, Contemporary or Impressionistic periods
  • All major and harmonic minor scales, arpeggios, four octaves, hands together
  • Sight-reading to be selected at the audition.
Repertoire for the BM degree should be at the level of, but not restricted to:
Classical pieces may include a first or last movement from a Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert sonatas, or Beethoven's Bagatelles.      

Romantic pieces may include Brahms' Intermezzi, Chopin's Waltzes, Mazurkas, Preludes, Fantasie-Impromptu, Nocturnes, Scherzos, Ballades, Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, and Schubert's Impromptus or Moments Musicaux.

Impressionistic/Contemporary pieces may include Debussy's Preludes, Etudes, Children's Corner, Ravel's Sonatina, Romanian Dances, Copland's Four Piano Blues, Dello-Joio's Sonatas, Prokofiev's-Visions Fugitives, and Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Op. 19.

Excerpts from sacred, Christian Contemporary, or arrangements are not acceptable audition pieces.

Please note that if you are intending to major in music education with piano as your primary instrument, you must audition and be accepted on another instrument/voice in addition to the piano in order to pursue this degree.

International students who are unable to come to campus for a live audition should submit a CD or DVD of their audition repertoire requirements.
