Jazz riffs will resonate across CMU's campus during the 44th Annual Jazz Weekend, February 2-3, 2017. From the initial downbeat to the last chord, this annual event offers the public a full line-up of jazz performances by CMU faculty, students and the most talented high school jazz musicians from across the state of Michigan. These students perform for top Midwest clinicians and adjudicators.
Thursday, February 2nd Jazz Weekend opens with the CMU Faculty Jazz Combo performing in Staples Family Concert Hall in the CMU music building. This concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door or are available by calling CMU Ticket Central at 888-347-3872.
Friday, February 3rd features a variety of free concerts, including all of the High School big bands and combos performing throughout the day. CMU student jazz ensembles and the acclaimed Central Wails Saxophone Orchestra will perform in the Bovee University Center's Down Under Club from 10 a.m. – 12 noon, and 1:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. CMU's Jazz Bones will perform at 3:00 p.m. in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium followed by Jazz Central at 4:00 p.m. and Jazz Lab I at 5:00 p.m.
At 8 p.m. on Friday, February 3rd international jazz percussionist
Carl Allen will perform in Plachta Auditorium. During his career, Allen has collaborated with jazz musicians such as Branford Marsalis, Phil Woods, Randy Brecker, Herbie Hancock, Lena Horne, and Terence Blanchard. The gifted Milwaukee-born, New York-based drummer, sideman, bandleader, entrepreneur and educator has more than 200 recording credits to his name.
Mr. Allen recently completed a 6-year tenure serving as the Artistic Director of Jazz Studies at The Julliard School in New York City, and currently holds positions at Trinity College in Melbourne, Australia, the Valley Christian School Jazz Camp in San Jose, CA, and The Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, FL.
