Caroline Powers, 2015 Broadcast and Cinematic Arts graduate, is an anchor and journalist for Western Mass News. She moved to New England with her husband, Anthony Rizzo, also a 2015 Central Michigan University alum, in August of 2017. Prior to joining WGGB-TV out of Springfield, MA, Caroline worked for WFSB-TV in Hartford, CT, 9&10 News in Traverse City and interned at WXYZ-TV Channel 7 out of Detroit.

Moving from a market ranked 118th in the USA to 30th presented some professional challenges that Caroline met head-on as she found success along the East Coast. Her first job in the East was as a sports reporter. Landing her current position was an excellent opportunity and has gained her significant positive notoriety.

Caroline applies skills she gained in her BCA major, her high school forensics competitions, and double Leadership and Communication minors daily in her work. Aspects like memorizing speeches, newswriting and storytelling, on camera work with the CMU News Central 34, and high-level reporting as the Lead Election Reporter for the 2014 election have been immensely helpful in becoming a successful broadcast journalist. She also cites her student employment and volunteerism with the Leadership Institute, her position as supervisor and caller for the University’s Phonathon, faculty mentorship, as well as her membership as a Phi Sigma Sigma sister.

Caroline says that the work of a reporter can be emotional and stressful, but one must “be human and temper your emotions” to get the job done. She’s gained some skills on the job that she couldn’t have gotten from the classroom. Caroline describes the difficulty in arriving first to an emergency scene and dealing with the tragic loss of another person’s life while reporting on it live. Though popular and well received, she’s learned to come to grips with the fact that she won’t be liked by every viewer.

As Caroline Powers and her husband, ESPN Content Associate, Anthony Rizzo enjoy exploring their new home along the East Coast, they will continue to grow professionally and are excited to see where life takes them. Caroline’s main goal is to move into more prominent news anchor roles while also continuing to investigate stories and reporting live.
