BFA Acting Auditions

Admission to the BFA Acting program is competitive and requires an audition.  Due to the pandemic, we are revising our plan for Fall 2021 admission auditions. An audition application form and updated details will be available soon.  Notifications will also appear on our social media channels, so please follow us @cmutheatre on InstagramFacebook, and Twitter

Below you’ll find information about past auditions. The coming year’s process will include similar activities with adjustments to fit the circumstances.
If you have questions about this process, please contact Steve Berglund, Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Fall 2021 Audition Preparation Information

Students not selected for admission to a BFA program may audition again in the coming year or study in another theatre degree program at CMU for which auditions are not required. All CMU students are eligible to participate in University Theatre productions.

Your audition gives us the opportunity to evaluate your work and to determine if you would be compatible with our program. Central Michigan University's Department of Theatre and Dance looks for students that display potential for a professional acting career.  We seek students that are self-driven, imaginative, motivated and talented.

Theatre Special Talent Scholarships

Any student auditioning for the BFA Acting program will automatically be considered for a Theatre Special Talent Scholarship as part of the process.  A student need only audition at one event.

Audition Preparation and Requirements

  1. Prepare two contrasting memorized monologues (no longer than 3 minutes combined total). Both must be from a contemporary (post-1960) play. "Contrasting" can mean two distinct styles, such as comedic and dramatic, or two distinct types of characters. We recommend selecting monologues that aren't too far removed from your age, type, and experience.
  2. Please bring a headshot (if you have one) and résumé that highlights any related training you may have had, performance experience, leadership or volunteer experience, and special skills.
  3. In addition to the monologues, there will also be an interview and a 45-minute group movement workshop. Please dress to move and bring a change of clothes for your audition pieces.
