BFA Acting Auditions

Admission to the BFA Acting program is competitive and requires an audition.  Due to the pandemic, we are only accepting recorded audition videos for Fall applicants. There will be no campus auditions.  Students who submit their BFA Acting application form by March 6, 2021, will also be considered for our Theatre Special Talent Scholarships.  (The deadline was extended from Feb. 6)

Your audition gives us the opportunity to evaluate your work and to determine if you would be compatible with our program. Central Michigan University's Department of Theatre and Dance looks for students that display potential for a professional acting career.  We seek students that are self-driven, imaginative, motivated, and talented.

Students not selected for admission to a BFA program may audition again in the coming year or study in another theatre degree program at CMU for which auditions are not required. All CMU students are eligible to participate in University Theatre productions.

Application process

The application process involves two steps, 1.) preparing and uploading your audition video to YouTube, and 2.) completing and submitting the application form linked below.  Be sure to create and upload your video, before completing the application.  Links to audition videos are required to submit the application form.  If you'd like to include an optional headshot and/or resume, links will also be required.

Detailed instructions are below.  If you have questions, you're welcome to contact Steve Berglund by email at bergl1s@cmich.edu or by phone at 989-774-3961.

Audition Preparation and Requirements

Prepare two contrasting memorized monologues (no longer than 3 minutes combined total). Both must be from a contemporary (post-1960) play. "Contrasting" can mean two distinct styles, such as comedic and dramatic, or two distinct types of characters. We recommend selecting monologues that aren't too far removed from your age, type, and experience.

One chair is permitted to use in the performance. No costumes or other props are allowed.  Please dress appropriately for the performance.

Recording your video

  • Prepare a single video file with both monologues.  If you prefer, you may record the monologues individually and combine them via editing.  Edits are only allowed between the two monologue performances.
  • Record the video so that the full body is always in the frame.
  • Begin the recording by telling us: 1. your name, 2. the play title, and 3.) the playwright for each monologue.
  • Check the volume level of your recording.

Uploading your video

Please upload your audition video to YouTube. During the upload process, be sure to set your video as unlisted.  Include your name, the play names and the playwright names on the video's YouTube page description.
