BFA Design and Tech Audition information

BFA Design/Tech Interviews

Students wishing to enter our BFA Design/Tech program are required to interview with our faculty/staff prior to an admissions decision.  New freshmen, transfer and current CMU students are invited to register to attend our annual admission events on Saturday, February 1 and Saturday, February 26, 2020, to meet with our team and talk about your interests and goals. Audition spaces can be reserved by completing the audition registration form (updated form coming soon).   We will respond by email to confirm your reservation and provide information about the event. If you're unable to attend one of these events, please contact Paul Collins, Scenery and Lighting Designer, or Ann Dasen, Costume Designer, or Dan Daugherty, Technical Director, after completing your registration form to look at alternatives.

Students not selected for admission to a BFA program may interview again in the coming year or may study in another theatre degree program at CMU for which an interview is not required. All CMU students are eligible to participate in University Theatre productions.

Your interview gives us the opportunity to evaluate your work and to determine if you would be compatible with our program. Central Michigan University's Department of Theatre and Dance looks for students that display potential for a professional design or tech career.  We seek students that are self-driven, imaginative, motivated and talented.

Theatre Talent Scholarships

Any student interviewing for the BFA Design/Tech program will automatically be considered for a Theatre Talent Scholarship.

Interview Preparation and Requirements

We are aware that opportunities to gain production experience and training are uncommon in some areas, and this will be considered in our admissions decision.  Registration is required as the first step.

  1. Prepare a list of your previous experiences in the field, noting the position you held or the role you played in the production, including: stage manager, set/lighting/costume design and construction, light/sound board, run crew, properties, etc.

  2. Prepare a list of any educational experiences you may have had in a design/tech related area.

  3. Be prepared to discuss your interests and goals, and why you'd like to be a part of the program.

  4. You may submit any pertinent documentation in advance as part of the Interview registration process.

  5. If you haven't already done so, please apply for admission to CMU at  Preference is given for CMU Merit Scholarships to students who apply before December 1.
