Asian Artist' Cultural Exchange: from Japan master Akira Takei and Chinese American Artist Lily Lihting Li Kostrzewa

Ms Kostrzewa is CMU Department of Art and Design alum who describes herself as a cross-cultural artist with a BFA degree in Chinese painting and a MFA degree in Modern painting. Her artistic search has focused on how to bridge the East/West cultures and bring them together.  Working together with Mr. Takei, this exhibit will allow Americans to see the merge of East and West cultures and trace back the historical and cultural differences through composition and storytelling.  This exhibit is sponsored by the CME Mitsuba Corporation.  You may learn more about Ms Kostrzewa by visiting her website at

"Apocalyptic Visuality in Medieval Illustrated Manuscripts"

Professor Emmerson (Ph.D., Stanford) is former Executive Director of the Medieval Academy, Editor of Speculum, Dean of Manhattan College, and Chair of the Art History Department at Florida State University.  He has published numerous articles and books on medieval apocalyptic art and literature, including Antichrist in the Middle Ages and The Apocalypse in the Middle Ages (edited with Bernard McGinn.) His talk is based on his current book project that surveys seven centuries of Medieval manuscripts, ca. 800-1480. This is part of the 2015 Stephen L. Barstow Department of Art & Design Lecture Series "Apocalypse Forever!"


Piotr Chizinski Artist Talk

Piotr Chizinski was living in downtown New York when Hurricane Sandy made landfall.  This experience undermined his perception of the hope and optimism a home once provided. Chizinski works with models, drawings and performance to explore issues of vulnerability and impermanence. He has participated in many national and international exhibitions and residencies, most recently as part of the U.S. pavilion at the Venice Biennial.  This is part of the 2015 Stephen L. Barstow Department of Art & Design Lecture Series "Apocalypse Forever!"
