Creating Community with International StudentsThursday, February 15
3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Bovee U.C. Mackinaw Room
According to David Yeager, helping students understand that the transition to college is challenging can help normalize the struggle many first-year students experience. Interventions and strategies have been developed to help students of various racial and socioeconomic status groups, but these are largely aimed at domestic students. International students contend not only with these factors, but also with language and cultural differences than may influence their feeling of belonging inside the classroom and on campus as a whole. This workshop will discuss the transition struggles of international students on CMU’s campus and provide strategies to incorporate them fully into the classroom community.
This workshop will be facilitated Cedric Taylor (SASW), Emily Bloesch (PSY), staff from the International Student and Scholar Services program, and a panel of international undergraduate students. Hosted by the Teaching and Learning Collective and the Excellence in Teaching Committee. For more information, contact Suzanne Sova at 989-774-1574 or email@example.com.
