Where did you do your internship?

The Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven, Michigan.

Why did you pick the internship you did?

It was close to home for me, and I wanted to work in a smaller museum where I would have the chance to get into a little bit of every part of museum work, as well as having more opportunity to be involved.

What were some of your favorite parts of your internship?

The educational tours were the most fun, getting to work with kids and working on the tall ship. I really enjoyed the small staff feel as well, because you really got to know your coworkers as well as the many volunteers.

What kind of jobs/activities did you participate in?

Since I did go to a smaller museum, I really got to spend time in all the different parts of running a museum. I spent hours at the front desk, many doing regular office work, as well as some in the archives and library. I also got to run and participate in educational tours, got a small overview of the business portion of running a non-profit, and worked on a regular basis with volunteers and special events. Opening in the morning and running tours of the tall ship were two especially fun jobs at the museum too.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes, definitely! It was an amazing experience in a great small town feel.

Is there any other guidance you would offer students looking for internships?

Make sure you pick your internship based on where you would like to make your career, because it's possible to get job opportunities from your internship.
