Where did you do your internship?
Mackinac State Historic Parks, Mackinaw City, MI, USA
What about this institution appealed to you when choosing an internship site?
The internship was in collections, an area I was interested in pursuing. It was in Michigan, and they provided housing and the opportunity for paid work in addition to the internship.
Tell us about a project you worked on during your internship.
My internship involved performing an inventory of all objects on display at the park sites on the mainland. This involved checking their location and updating the location in the collections database.
What was your typical day like during your internship?
Check in with my supervisor, head to the site, inventory, come back to the main office, update the database, go home.
What was your favorite part of your internship?
The mobility presented by the internship was a nice change of pace. Although the work could be tedious at times, there was a number of things that would come up during the day to break it up. Moving from site to site instead of being stuck in an office all day was really nice.
Were there any unique aspects of this internship site?
Housing provided next door to the main office made for an easy commute. The opportunity to gain experience in museum studies outside of collections such as volunteering as an interpreter or paid work as a guest services representative
