Dr. Ringquist has been teaching political science at Central Michigan University since 1971. He had taught at a liberal arts college in Pennsylvania before coming to CMU. His Ph.D. is from the University of Oklahoma. His dissertation focused upon the Relationships of Political Violence to Economic, Social and Political Development in states formerly under French rule during several different time periods preceding and following their independence from France. His fields of graduate study included American Government & Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, Public Administration, with an outside field in Sociology.
Professor Ringquist has been active in the life of the Political Science Department and the University during his tenure at CMU. He served a total of 15 years as Department Chair in Political Science, served as Chair of the Academic Senate, on numerous governance committees and task forces as well as a term on the executive board of the faculty collective bargaining unit. Dr. Ringquist served as Dean of the College of Extended Learning for over six years in the mid and late 1990s and as a senior officer and Assistant Vice President for University Development and Alumni Relations for a year and a half before returning to the faculty in the spring of 2002. He has taught courses on Research Methodology, African Politics, Constitutional Law, Elections, Political Parties, Legislative Process, Environments of Administration, Public Administration, etc. Currently he teaches courses on Public Policy Making, Strategic Leadership, Political Leadership, the Presidency, American Government & Politics, etc.
Professor Ringquist has published in books on The Presidency & Congress, International Terrorism, International Development, Lobbyists, etc., as well as making numerous presentations on Distance & Distributed Education, Adult Learning, Fiscal Stress in American States, Lobbying and Legislative Behavior, etc. He made major presentations at national and international conferences on Adult and Distance Learning and on Political Science topics. He remains sought out as a consultant for Distance and Distributed Learning programming at colleges and universities around the U.S.
Among his most cherished professional activities has been the teaching of adult-learners at College of Extended Learning sites in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. He also has been actively involved in creating courses in the College of Extended Learning’s MSA degree and working for an extended period of time as a member of the faculty team to evaluated prior learning experiences for non-traditional adult students.
Professor Ringquist is committed to teaching courses that are learner-centered and where students take leadership roles in the learning process. He seems himself more as a “guide on the side” rather than just a “sage on the stage”. He is committed to his students developing and utilizing critical thinking concepts and tools, e.g., where reasoning has a purpose; where reasoning is designed to solve problem(s); where assumptions and points of view are fully examined; where reasoning is based upon data and evidence; where individuals explore ideas and concepts so that they can make sound inferences; and, where the consequences of reasoning leads to an understanding of the implications and consequences of political actions.
Dr. Ringquist has a passion for politics and hopes that you, his students, will develop at least a heightened interest in politics during and after you complete this course. If you are someone who likes to follow a national, state or local election campaign as much as you’d want to watch a football game “or” you prefer reading the news section of magazines and newspapers as much as you’d want to read the human interest or sports section of the paper, then you will be a kindred spirit with Professor Ringquist. Even if you do not have a high level of initial interest at the beginning of this course, he sincerely hopes you will develop a heightened interest in politics during this class.
