In March 2008 senior Sierra Brooks volunteered with a group of other CMU students at an orphanage in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. The sponsoring organization, Orphanage Outreach, runs a program called Teach Corps, a program created by two CMU graduates. Teach Corps trains volunteers to teach English to the students at the orphanage. Overall, this was an excellent cultural experience for Sierra and the other students from CMU.
"This was a chance for me to experience things the text book teaches, such as inequalities in the school system. I learned that no matter where a person is from, a rural town, the city, or a different country . . . all have great potential and truly are created the same. Just some of us are blessed with resources and the opportunities to grow in that potential. I believe that it is our privilege then to share what we've been given so that others may flourish as well. That's what's so great about being a social worker." Sierra Brooks
