Dr. Smith’s Absence and Late-Addition Policies
If you have to miss one or more of
Dr. Smith’s classes for one of the reasons listed below, if you’ve added a course during the first week of classes, if you've arranged an absence in advance, or if you have to submit an assignment after its due date, please note the following:
Students are responsible for getting notes from a colleague in the course. Lectures won’t be repeated for individual students but I’m very happy to talk about the material and answer any questions once you’ve had a chance to review notes from the class. Contact the
History Department office to make an appointment.
Excuses and Documentation
Absences will ordinarily be excused for the following reasons:
- Illness or medical emergencies. Medical absences require a signed note that includes your name and specific date(s) that include the class or classes you missed.
- Bereavement, such as the death of a close family member. The university has adopted a centralized policy for reporting and documenting funeral and related absences. Please follow the instructions in the policy and this should take care of everything.
- Certain academic events required by your major or program. These should be cleared in advance with Dr. Smith, along with a written statement of support and explanation by the CMU department or faculty members sponsoring or requiring the event.
- Other activities required and authorized by the university, such as sporting events. These should be discussed and cleared in advance with Dr. Smith and require the usual documentation.
Most other reasons for missing class — including important life events such as weddings and bucket-list trips that you'll never have a chance to do again — don't qualify as excused.
Adding a Course During the First Week of Classes
Students who miss lectures or other classes because of adding or getting into the course during the first week of classes should contact Dr. Smith to make sure he knows and then follow the instructions in the General Policy section above.
