The Department of History offers a Master of Arts degree, with an integrated Bachelors of Arts/Master of Arts degree program option. Because the department also offers a special MA as part of its doctoral program, the degree described here is usually known as the "traditional MA." For a more detailed explanation, see the Joint MA/PhD page.
The traditional MA is a 30-hour program designed to be completed in two or three terms if students enroll full-time. Part-time students are equally welcome. Most classes are offered in the evenings and meet once a week in three-hour slots. Students work closely with a faculty advisor in their historical field to craft a unique course of study, and there are possibilities for significant interdisciplinary work in cognate fields. There are also significant funding opportunities for highly qualified students.
