I study American social, cultural, and music history of the 20th century. My research centers around punk rock subcultures of the late 1970s onward. I spent my senior undergraduate year researching fanzines, interviews, live recordings, oral-history books, and my own interviews with musicians and fans involved in the early 1980s Detroit hardcore punk scene. I completed my honors thesis on the motivations of hatred and frustration with contemporary society and goals of alternative community building within the scene.
Research and Teaching Interests
20th century American history, history of counter-cultures, history of rock music, youth cultures and rebellion
