Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, or Family Studies Scholarship

Leslie and Leonard Lieberman Social Science Scholarship

Scholarship awarded annually to an anthropology, social work, sociology or family studies major. The scholarship was established in memory of Leslie and Leonard Lieberman, former faculty members in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Junior or senior standing
  • Anthropology, sociology, or social work, or family studies major
  • Minimum 3.4 GPA
  • Recipients are chosen on the basis of excellence in academic performance and writing skills as demonstrated in an essay describing career goals.

Center for Research on Poverty (CROP) Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to the student who writes a master's thesis that enhances the understanding of the causes, consequences and alleviation of human poverty.

Karen L. Mohr Chavez Memorial

Scholarship is awarded annually to an anthropology major.  The scholarship was established in memory of Karen L. Chavez, former faculty member of Anthropology/Archaeology in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Sophomore, junior, or senior standing
  • Anthropology major
  • Minimum 3.4 GPA

Friends of Anthropology Fund

Awards provide supplemental financial support to anthropology students enrolled in field school programs. The fund was established in honor of Dr. Mary E. Fleming Mathur, member of the anthropology faculty from 1970-1994.

Funding requirements:

  • Anthropology majors who intend to study anthropology in a graduate program are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants are selected based on academic excellence overall and in anthropology courses.

Edward E. McKenna Academic Excellence Award

Scholarship awarded annually to sociology majors. It was established in 1998 in memory of Edward E. McKenna, a dedicated teacher, scholar, and unionist.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Junior or senior standing
  • Sociology major
  • Recipients are chosen on the basis of research paper(s) submitted with the application as well as overall achievement in sociology.

Bernard N. Meltzer Prize

Awarded every two years to provide a stipend to the student who has written the best master's thesis in sociology within the prior two years. The prize was established by friends in honor of Bernard N. Meltzer, former faculty member and chairperson of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work.

  • Sociology graduate students (Plan A) are eligible to apply.

Greg and Antoinette Rickle Scholarship

Scholarship is offered every other year to an anthropology student demonstrating financial need. Will be offered next in February 2021.   

Scholarship requirements:

  • Anthropology major
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Recipients will be chosen on the basis of a one-page essay explaining their specific interests in anthropology and how those interests relate to their career goals.

Social Work Scholarships

Paul M. Bishop and Family Endowed Award

Scholarship awarded to a student enrolled in social work courses with preference for out-of-state residents.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Junior or senior standing
  • Minimum 3.25 GPA
  • Students enrolled in social work courses
  • Preference to out-of-state residents who demonstrate financial need

Nancy Stebbins Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Nancy Stebbins Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 by friends and family of Nancy Stebbins to recognize the impact of her educational experience at Central Michigan University and to provide for those who pursue the goal of helping others. A renewable award will be distributed once a year to a student enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences who is studying the field of social work.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Junior or senior standing
  • Studying in the field of social work
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Applicant must demonstrate a financial need by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Ai d (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. (For additional FAFSA information, please contact the Student Service Court .)
  • Scholarship may be renewed up to one year as funding permits.
