The purpose of the CQI rotation is to prepare the student to recognize, evaluate, and problem-solve barriers that may hinder hospital processes and develop methods for Quality Improvement related to those processes in the clinical setting. Students will also become familiar with the process of formally initiating a clinical study in the hospital setting and methodology for evaluating your own study. Furthermore, students will be introduced to hospital based process-improvement processes and participate in goal-directed activities through a week-long rapid improvement project. 

Key Objectives

  • Students should demonstrate understanding of basic tenets of patient-centered and evidence-based care.
  • Students should be able to identify barriers to patient care. 
  • Students should be able to develop methods for process improvement based on identified barriers.
  • Discuss solutions for identified health care disparities.
  • Discuss demographic influences on the delivery of quality and effective health care services.
  • Discuss ways in which a physician could assist in meeting the healthcare needs of the medically underserved populations.
  • Students should be able to evaluate practice patterns in the hospital setting and identify deviations from standard of care or from evidence-based treatment guidelines.
  • Students should be able to suggest ways to study these deviations and develop and implement strategies for quality improvement based on these findings.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively and respectfully with patients, families, physicians, other healthcare professionals, and colleagues in the medical team environment and across the continuum of care
  • Demonstrate skilled listening and responding in communicating with other caregivers and colleagues
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively implement a study in the hospital setting via effective communication and teaching of all relevant personnel involved.
  • Demonstrate compliance with all patient privacy standards. 
  • Demonstrate ethical study methods and implementation of study interventions.
  • Demonstrate respect for colleagues during the process of study completion in the healthcare setting.

Assessment Method

College of Medicine standard elective assessment will be completed by supervising faculty at conclusion of elective clerkship.
